Useful case study

This ethnography helps relate topics of cultural anthropology, however, it seems more like a novel at times because the chapters are almost all less than 10 pages and only half of them are describing actually useful ethnographic data while the rest is Wormsley using outdated cliches.

A bit pretentious, but considering the topic, very relatable

William Wormsley is my Anthropology instructor at drexel university. Since taking the course, it allows a much greater understanding of the book, not only subject related, but as in insight to the writer and the points he was trying to stress. His writing tends towards pretentious i guess, in the way that he seems he is attempting to actually write literature, and some of his metaphors and analogies were just ridiculous. But its a good book, offering valuable insight into an indigineous people of New Guinea that is easily relatable. a definite recommendation to anyone interested in the field of anthropology.

About the Author
Wilbert J. McKeachie is Professor Emeritus and former chair of the Department of Psychology at the University of Michigan. He is also a research scientist and past director of the University of Michigan Center for Research on Learning and Teaching. He has served as president of the American Psychological Association and of the American Association for Higher Education. He has also served as chair of the Committee on College and University Teaching, Research, and Publication of the American Association of University Professors. He speaks at workshops and conferences around the world and has published numerous articles in the United States and internationally.

Marilla Svinicki is Associate Professor in the Department of Educational Psychology and the retired director of the Center for Teaching Effectiveness at the University of Texas at Austin. She earned both her B.A. and M.A. at Western Michigan University and her Ph.D. at the University of Colorado. Her research interests include application of principles of learning to instruction in higher education and development of faculty and graduate students as teachers. She regularly teaches the college teaching methodology course at UT Austin along with the psychology of human learning and instructional psychology.

No Nonsense Teacher's Aid

As an adjunct instructor, this McKeachie book has provided me with some very valuable tools in the classroom. I use the strategies and perspectives in my own classroom to help manage the diverse group of students from millenials to boomers. It is like an academic mentor's advice for dealing with everything from problem students to creating more active learning environments for my students. I am embracing the fact that I am still learning (Goya's quote: aun aprendo)--just like my students. I am looking at the newer edition today for more class and pedagogy insights.

Great Resource

Great resource for those teaching at a college level or those thinking about teaching at a college level. I am a PhD student and this text was required for a teaching class I took. There are many things presented here that I never realized professors must to do teach a successful course. McKeachie provided ample examples and ideas to translate the ideas presented in this book into actions in the classroom. I will definitely be using this as a resource when I teach my own college-level classes.

One of my favorites

My favorite of Czech future dystopian literature (The only other book that comes close is Stanislaw Lem's Futurological Congress, which is a more colorful and intricately developed work than the more widely read, "Solaris"). The translation is very good, and Hrabal's writing style is easily accessible to Soviet drunks trying to escape the ails of their age - that being said, this book was banned by the Goskomizdat (Soviet state agency for the censorship of written materials) during Hrabal's lifetime. It's a good book to read, but a better book to gift to anyone who is looking for meaning in society, or introspection in a system of seemingly innocuous vagaries and throw-away culture.

For thirty-five years Hanta compacts trash in what he calls his basement because he spends so much time there. In truth, it is his workplace. In reality, it is his life. He finds his essence in life through what he compacts and does not compact. No marriage. No children. Just compacted trash and the treasures he saves. He has spent his life in "Too Loud a Solitude."

This short book is apparently various things to various readers. It's the memoir of a man who works 24/7, so to speak, without a vacation. It's a parable of modern times replacing old ways of doing things and the people who do them. It's a metaphor for the condition of man: head in the glory of the heavens, feet in the grossness of the sewer. It's a satire of the indestructability of books and knowledge. It's a tall tale about a man who wraps up trash in beautiful Old Masters' art reproductions or hiding one book treasure in the center of each bale of trash. It's a story of love for books and the treasures in words. It's the sacrifice of the beautiful for the ugly. Or vice versa.

Whatever the reader chooses, the story remains that of a man finding meaning in a life that could be ugly, dirty, sordid, and depressing. Instead, Hanta seeks out books that he deems worthy of saving. All his compacting friends take home books. Hanta himself has two tons of books on shelves over his bed like the Sword of Damocles over his head. That's just over his head. Along his walls, in his bathroom, in every available space there are books he has saved during his 35 years on the job.

I, as reader, was appalled that Hanta relates scatalogical stories so often until I realized he faced-- head on-- the ugly, sordid aspects of life, including waste products of the body, as well as waste products of the mind. Yes, books not sold, not read, just "wasted" as trash. Which is worse?

This amazing little book should be required reading for all young people looking for their livelihood. Hanta will show them the dignity of all work and the meaning of it all. Or not. Hanta does have the last laugh, so to speak.

This is more poetry than prose, in my opinion. I recommended it for book club, and it did not get very good reviews from my co-workers. It's a beautiful work, a quick read, and I really enjoyed the almost musical quality of the words.

Makes perfect sense

After reading the book, my wife and I decided to give the diet a try (excluding the enema) just to see what effect it would have on us. To our surprise, we lost weight without exercise, and our blood pressure dropped to it's lowest level in years. My wife even has expressed that she has more energy throughout the day and has not have had to take allergy medicine nearly as frequent as she used to. What I found interesting was that once you start eating a healthier diet, you cannot go back to the junk food without getting sick. To me this really illustrated that the human body needs and wants the foods that are listed in the book. I'll admit that it is difficult at first to make the changes in the way we eat and we are not quite there as of yet, but it all makes perfect sense. While we are not doing the enemas at this time, we are not ruling them out in the future. But if you are fighting obesity, diabetes,or high blood pressure and have an open mind, this book is well worth it.

Gerson's approach to wellness is sensible and in layman's terms, practical, and after reading, you will know exactly what to do to achieve your goal. Also loaded with facts that will help you stick with the routine because you will know the why's behind the what-to-do's. The information is captivating so that you won't want to put the book down and you'll be motivated to get started. Includes a precise schedule and recipes.

if you can find it cheap, buy it!

If you're into the Gerson therapies, this book is pretty much a must-have. The problem is the price. It covers Gerson principles as it applies to three health topics: Obesity, Diabetes and High Blood Pressure. Gerson Media has now divided this information up into three books, which of course means you have to pay for three books instead of just one [this one being now out of print]. The protocols of the therapy don't change per se, so this is just as good as having the three under one cover [according to 'Marcus' - the fellow I talked to at Gerson Media].
