Cyborg Spell Shop: A Harkon Colony Short Story

I love my fantasy and magic but not too bothered about sci fi so why did I buy this - I was looking for something short and punchy for a train journey. The title made absolutely no sense but I was in a rush. Well I am so glad I got this book, (I shall have to rush my purchases more often!) It is a great short story, the characters are great and the story is wacky enough to be engaging. I must admit I was ready to slam this book and leave a crap review but I found myself getting drawn in by the story and the characters to the point where I wanted it to last a lot longer.

In short this is a great book that is well written. I am looking forward to getting more by this author :-)

Hilarious and entertaining short story! Short ribs, please.

This is an exceedingly amusing little short story about a technosage who uses technology to convince people he knows magic. Of course, the tables get turned on him when someone demands the only spell he can't give: Love. Our hero then finds himself on the other side of his own style of "magic," and has to use his wits to scramble out. It all works out in the end in an amusing and thoroughly satisfying manner. It feels in some ways like a zany and hilarious '80s movie. I'm a big fan of author James Chalk!

Not as impressed as I'd hoped

The hymnal is a decent resource, but isn't extremely useful in determining the original reading of various hymns. The older texts have been altered to reflect contemporary concerns of feminist theology, even in removing certain references to God being Father (for one example, see "Great Is Thy Faithfulness," #276, footnote). The hymns are not mangled as a general rule, but I see the irritating "alt." designation next to more older texts than not. The type is clear and the musical settings are sound, so if egalitarian/feminist theology doesn't bother you, this is a fine hymnal.

Every Presbyterian Church Should Have This.

We understand that the Presbyterian Church is at the start of making a new hymnal (due to debut in 2014) to replace this one. Their theory is that every generation needs a new hymnal and if you look at the preceding hymnals (the blue or green hymnal of 1933, the maroon hymnal of 1955 and the ill-fated Worshipbook of the 70s), you see their point.

Even so, this one gets most things right and will be hard to beat.

The second half of the 20th century experienced what has been called the Hymn Explosion, and many of the best hymns of that time are represented in this book which is still called the "new" hymnal in most Presbyterian churches. There are some works that were hard to introduce to congregations that are now among their most beloved hymns represented: Let Us Talents and Tongues Employ, Here I Am Lord, etc. Fred Pratt Green, Timothy Dudley-Smith, Jane Parker Huber and Hal Hopson are all represented here, as well they ought to be.

There are also some under-utilized gems in it as well, songs like "Come O Spirit" (for Pentecost) and "God Bless Your Church" (for an anniversary) that have also found their way into other denominational hymnals.

All in all it is a great hymnal for expanding the congregations "Favorites" repertoire without being too jarring.

LindaJo McKim and company did yeoman's work in creating it. The layout is according to the liturgical year. The indexes are thorough and easy to use. The print is clear; the size is comfortable to hold while singing. There is a non-denominational version of this hymnal available too, from the publisher, for non-Presbyterian congregations who find it to their liking.

Not that impressed

I was there in church in 1992 when they unpacked the (then) new PRESBYTERIAN HYMNAL: HYMNS, PSALMS AND SPIRITUAL SONGS (pew edition). I have tried over the last 21 years to warm up to the hymnal, but while I admit it has its uses it has never become a favorite of mine. Despite the fact that the hymnal has 564 entries (not counting Service Music), it has never felt that full to me. One reason is that a number of the hymns are based on foreign sources -- Chinese in particular -- that never caught on; but I think an even stronger reason is that so many of the good old tunes are used, and re-used, and re-re-used, sometimes to the point of absurdity. In at least seven instances the same tune is used for four different hymns, which to me is overkill. The wonderful tune FOREST GREEN, for example, is quite correctly used as one setting for "O Little Town of Bethlehem" and for "All Beautiful the March of Days," but also for two other lyric settings of lesser import. The lesser-revered CAITHNESS is used for two different Psalms settings (why?) as well as for two additional hymns. ABERYSTWYTH furnishes the tune for two classics: "Jesus, Lover of My Soul" and "Watchman, Tell Us of the Night," but also for two more hymns I've never heard sung in any church. Nor is there any need for four different hymns set to the tune ES FLOG EIN KLEIN WALDVOEGELEIN. These two tendencies -- foreign tunes that stayed foreign and overuse of the same tune for too many multiple applications -- cut down on the usefulness of the PRESBYTERIAN HYMNAL and diminished its impact.

While this is going on, while one might say the Anglo-Britannic import of the old tunes its stretched to the max, there are a great many more familiar hymns in the American mold that are not to be found here. They include "Standing on the Promises," "Rock of Ages," "It Is Well With My Soul," "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day," "In Remembrance of Me," "We've A Story to Tell to the Nations," or anything based on BROTHER JAMES'S AIR (the 23rd Psalm, among others). While some of these may be a little on the low-church side, I have known Presbyterian congregations to enjoy them as much as Methodists or Baptists do. I really cannot find it in my heart to give this PRESBYTERIAN HYMNAL more than four stars, and a low four stars at that. The situation is further complicated by the fact that it is in its last full year of current-hymnal status. Later in 2013 the Presbyterians will release the new GLORY TO GOD hymnal, which is expected to become the standard pew hymnal for Presbyterian Church (USA) congregations. I can't imagine a Presbyterian congregation wanting to adopt this 1992 volume at this late date; for general home use one of the better private-market hymnals like WORSHIP AND REJOICE or the CELEBRATING GRACE HYMNAL would probably be more useful.

The author does a nice job attempting to separate the wheat from the chaff

For those with a taste for modern American historical conspiracies, author Donald Jeffries serves up a full course dinner.
By their very nature, political conspiracies are difficult to decipher and even more difficult to explain. The author does
a nice job attempting to separate the wheat from the chaff. Ultimately, this book may raise more questions than it answers.
And that's a good thing.

Hidden History begins with The Mother of All Conspiracies: The Assassination of John Fitzgerald Kennedy
and takes the reader through the Sixties and Seventies, the administrations of Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush,
and Obama. It ends with the chapter Where Do We Stand Now?

Chronicling these events is an ambitious and difficult task, but author Jeffries manages well. Hidden History
is a compelling read and an important one. The reader will be reminded of things forgotten and undoubtedly
learn some things they didn't know.

Even those skeptical of things conspiratorial would benefit from reading Hidden History, in my opinion.

Eye opening insight to the injustices of the past.

This book was an impressive compilation of all the most controversial events of the past fifty years. There was a lot of new information as well, and some things that were not so well known or that most people had forgotten. The JFK assassination was covered in depth, and I enjoyed how the author wove all the many Kennedy tragedies together. The chapter on the death of JFK, Jr was really full of shocking information.

You will find assassinations, lots of what the author calls "unnatural deaths," child sex scandals involving powerful figures, a long analysis of the Oklahoma City Bombing, Waco, 9/11, the corruption of both liberal and conservative politicians and much more in "Hidden History." I highly recommend it to everyone.

A book that shows the world as it really is

As he writes in his Foreword, "There is a willful desire on the part of those in positions of authority to keep the masses down, to involve us in perpetual wars, and to deny the great majority of Americans true liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Until the Internet came along, Americans had to rely on the television networks, daily newspapers, and large circulation magazines for their information. Now that there are finally true alternative sources available on the web, the dishonest nature of the mainstream media is brutally apparent. It's become almost comical to watch these relics from a bygone era continue to babble on about an absurdly restricted selection of topics, to control the tenor of debate, and transparently attempt to manipulate the public, as they were so successful in the past...In the pages that follow, you'll find an uninterrupted timeline of conspiratorial activity on the part of our leaders."
I have been an attorney for over four decades. If I were a law school professor today teaching criminal law, I would make Jeffries' "Hidden History" suggested reading supplementary to the students' mandatory assignments. Why? Because his book truly shows the world as it really it is.
Paul Craig Roberts, former Assistant Secretary of the Treasury under President Reagan, recently opined: "Americans are a pitifully misinformed people. All of history is a history of false flag operations. useful pocket guide to Barcelona

Having just returned from a trip to Barcelona, and having brought several pocket guides to the city, we found this little book fairly useful.

First of all, the covers and pages are glossy so they don't stain easily, which was unique to this guide. Secondly, there are LOTS of small color photographs, which is nice, though they are necessarily small. The front and back covers fold out to maps of the city and the metro system, and a selected street index. The book is organized into "top ten" lists: attractions, Modernista buildings, squares, churches, museums, cafes, restairants and tapas bars, night-time spots, gay & lesbian hangouts, shopping areas, markets, city views, parks & beaches, walks and bike rides, activities, attractions for children, folk festivals, and performance venues. In the next section, top ten lists are given for each geographic section of the city, and the lists mix resteraunts, attractions, etc. The final section, called "Streetsmart", gives top ten helpful hints for: getting to barcelona, getting around the city, ways to explore, tours, information sources, security, health, banking, eating, shopping, budget travel and hotels. Each list is accompanied by a map or graphic and each item gets a few descriptive sentences and includes hours, prices and metro stop information. The book concludes with an incomplete index and some useful phrases.

We found this guide pretty useful and compact, and would definitely use others in the series when travelling.

Barcelona Top Ten Guide

`Top Ten Barcelona' is a small and attractive look at this beautiful Spanish city. In a pocket sized format you get beautifully illustrated guides to various aspects of the city, from general highlights to churches and chapels and parks and beaches to performing arts this book covers a wide range of activities and a hell of a lot more. There are some excellent maps and a pull out map you can take separately and use whilst sight-seeing. This is a bit sparse on hotel and restaurant info and I'd recommend you use this book to whet your appetite before you go and to plan what sights you will see and then use a good guide book from the likes of Lonely Planet to plan you accommodation and eating. This has brief info at the back with travel tips and a language guide, but again nowhere near as comprehensive or clear as other guide books. This is very attractive and great to flick through for inspiration, but is best used in conjunction with an up to date guide book and using both would make a wonderful package to get the most from your trip.

Best travel guide for Barcelona

I've had the pleasure of spending nearly three weeks in Barcelona on three different trips now (total of 19 days). Each morning I toss this little jewel into my purse or daypack and leave any other guides I've brought with me in the hotel. The book is fabulous if you only have a couple of days to spend there, but is also very useful for repeat visits (I'm just now coming to the end of this little guide's usefulness). Don't leave home without it (or its newer replacement) if you're traveling to marvelous Barcelona.

Different, and utterly compelling.

WATUNNA : An Orinoco Creation Cycle, by Marc de Civrieux, edited and translated from the Spanish by David M. Guss. 195 pp. North point Press, 1980.
I first learned of this book from a review by John Updike, 'Happy on Nono despite Odosha,' which was reprinted in his 'Hugging the Shore' (Penguin Books, 1983, pp.669-75). Normally I don't read much anthropology, and have no particular interest in myths, but Updike's was such an excellent review and got me so excited about this book that I decided to get a copy. It turned out to be the most fascinating compilation of myth I've ever run into, and one with a significant difference.
Rather than being recast in the scholarly prose of your standard anthropologist, the Watunna Creation stories are given to us as they issued from the mouths of the Makiritare themselves, a tribe which lives in the mountainous regions of the upper Orinoco in Southern Venezuela. They were pieced together by French ethnographer, Marc Civrieux, who spent over twenty years visiting the villages of the Makiritare and listening to their vivid and moving myths of the world's creation, and the role their tribe played tribe within it.
The word 'myth' is, of course, a convenient catch-all. In fact it explains nothing. All it does is serve to excuse us from further thought, as does the word 'instinct,' a word which really refers to a kind of intelligence that we do not understand at all. But if even a tiny fraction of what the Makiritare are saying is true - if in fact these stories are not myth, but, as they themselves firmly believe, real history - it would indicate a knowledge of human history that reaches back in time for tens and perhaps even hundreds of thousands of years.
But whether 'myth' or 'history,' the Watunna stories are fascinating, and they have been beautifully rendered into English by David M. Guss. Here are a few lines from the opening of the book:
"There was Kahuna, the Sky Place. The Kahuhana lived there just like now. They're good, wise people. And they were in the beginning too. They never died. There was no sickness, no evil, no war. The whole world was Sky. No one worked. No one looked for food. Food was always there, ready. // There were no animals, no demons, no clouds, no winds. In the highest sky was Wanadi, just like now. He gave his light to the people. . . ." (page 21).
Besides a Translator's Preface, and a 19-page Introduction on the history of the Makiritare and the nature of their Watunna, which in its highest form is communicated from the spirit world in a secret language, and is heard only by initiates while in trance, the book also contains a section of eight interesting photographs of the Makiritare people, a detailed 20-page glossary, and two maps. The book, as is customary with North Point Press, is well-printed on excellent paper, stitched, and bound in a glossy wrapper.
If you're looking for something both different and utterly compelling, and if I haven't succeeded in convincing you, check out John Updike's review, because I'm pretty sure he will. He certainly convinced me, and he was right!

This book is great!

This book examines and coveys the creation tales of the Watunna tribe located in tropical rain forest of Venezuela as collected over 15 years by the author. The stories and the descriptions of the story weavers are spell binding. One of the more interesting books I have ever read! See if you can find the connections and similarities between the creation stories of your people and the Watunna!

This book was excellent! If every course I took had me reading a book like this, my grades would be pristine. The first few pages of the book are completely boring, but if you just skip the intro and go right into the folklore you will not be able to stop reading this book. Once you're done with the book you'll actually want to read the intro to learn about the people. My teacher told us this was a great book to curl up on a lazy afternoon and drink tea while reading...we all laughed at her...but she was not kidding. I will keep this book forever and re-read it regularly, it's great.

Good information for advanced industrial electrician, or engineer.

Generally good technical information. A bit of emphasis on "older style" electromechanical relays used for power system protection, but the principles are universal, and still apply to modern numerical relays. A very good choice for anyone who works "in the field."

I would certainly buy it again.

Wilkie Collins was born in 1824. A close friend and contemporary of Charles Dickens, Collins became one of the best known of Victorian fiction writers. He wrote 25 novels, 50 short stories, 15 plays, and over 100 non-fiction pieces. His work showed the beginnings of detective fiction and horror writing. He died on September 23, 1889.

Lots of Collins at a low price--but a poor TOC.

[This review was revised on 06/07/12 and pertains specifically to the H&H edition--though some of the TOC issues I found in that version MAY also pertain to the Golgotha edition as well.]

To get so very many of Wilkie Collins' significant works for only a dollar is a good deal. I like his tales; they are descriptive and often creepy, deliberately-paced and well-crafted, entertaining and satisfying. In my pre-Kindle days I had spent many years trying to obtain WC's works, and I never did round up this many. But the more I actually used and read this particular ebook collection, the more dissatisfied I became, not with Collins, but with this particular edition of his works.

Access to specific items within it can be difficult and frustrating. The TOC does take you directly to the many titles listed, but this listing is an alphabetical mix of novels, several individual short stories and several volumes of collected short stories--but there is no indication as to which is which. With regard to the short story collections, the TOC only lists and leads you to the book titles, not to specific short stories within any of these books. Nor are these specific short story titles listed anywhere so can know what they are to search and locate them. For what it lists, the TOC works fine, but overall it is rather primitive. Another minor nuisance for those who wish to arrange their Kindle books alphabetically by author is that this will appear under "Wilkie" rather than "Collins." Nevertheless, all of Collins' novels EXCEPT "The Dead Secret" are included as well as (it seems) a great many short stories. So this set does offer a LOT of content for a very low price, but access to some of it can be difficult.

After a year with this set, I replaced it with the Delphi Complete Wilkie Collins Collection (for $2.99) because it offers more content, and specific short stories are much more readily accessible. For the occasional reader of Collins, or one who wishes to "try" him, or one for whom price is an issue, the H&H set is quite okay, but true fans of Wilkie Collins will probably prefer the Delphi set. [In the Kindle store searchbox type "Delphi Collins" to learn more about that set.] Whichever edition of Collins you choose to read, be prepared for some highly entertaining, Victorian thrills.

One to the best computer books I've read!

This is one of the top few computer books that I have ever read (and I've read hundreds)!

It has been a pleasure to work with and work through (actually, I've only done the first 31 problems so far). The problems are carefully thought out, and clearly expressed. I couldn't be more pleased with this book!

Challenging SQL Query Problems to help you hone your skills

I've been a DBA for over 15 years and have written a lot of T-SQL code, but this book was a great refresher and introduced some new practices, query ideas I had never thought about before. This is a great book for sharpening your T-SQL querying skills and helping you to gauge your skills -- useful for interview prep and other. I think this book would be useful for both beginners and advanced users.

I bought this book along with a similar book on SQL Queries. This book is very good for developers that are new to SQL and want to practice with real world problems. The big difference that I liked between the two books is that this one provided an "expected results" section for each question.

I recommended it to a guy in my company that wants to learn SQL.
