Heavy on character designs

[[VIDEOID:mo3PKGBULQ1XOQU]]Massive Black Volume 2 is finally here. That's a four year gap from the first artbook Massive Black Volume 1 that was released in 2008.

As with most artbooks from Ballistic Publishing, this title comes in various editions. There are three, namely the Slipcase, Special Leather and Folio editions. The Special Leather and Folio editions are only available at Ballistic Publishing's website. For early buyers, they are giving some posters.

For the past four years, they have been busy creating concept art for movies and video games. This book collects those and also a small portion of advertising art.

There's a section dedicated to content they created themselves. There are video game concepts for titles like Zombie Playground, Mothhead and Proxy, and a comic called Transient Man created by Justin 'Coro' Kaufman.

The book is heavy on character designs. a bit on weapons and vehicles and not much on environments. The character designs are mainly from games, such as from Infamous, Silent Hill, Red Faction: Armageddon and many more. The most eye-catching ones are the creature designs, especially from the untitled SEGA project which required them to draw 'Baroque-style' monsters with crazy amount of detail. There are also many artworks from concepts that never materialize.

There isn't much 3D work in the book. Even those from Transformers are 2D concept art.

I also enjoyed reading all the inspiring design commentary.

I felt the book could be much thicker though. Figuratively speaking, 196 pages is considered thin for four years of work from Massive Black. But for what it's worth, everything included are awesome.

This is a fantastic concept art book.

Massive Black is awesome

An awesome artbook filled with beautiful digital drawings and renders. This covers the major projects Massive Black has worked on, including Hasbro, Infamous, Red Faction, and many more. It's mostly movie and video games, though there is also a small section on commercials. I like the insightful commentary that accompanied many of the drawings.

I own the first volume and I enjoyed it as well. I'm a 3D modeler and in volume one there where more 3D works, But this volume is great as well very inspiring. I really enjoy the thought process of production and Hey!!! its really just great artwork.

My first copy of this book was loaned and loaned until it vanished! This is a rare book in that the author was a true clairvoyant and is telling what she sees first hand. The book is also organized by fairy types.

Although this book is quite old now, the subject material is as fresh as the day it was written.
I regret that I've not ready any other of Ms. Gelder's books to date.
She writes in an easy reading style and makes the subject very real.
Once you purchase this book you'll want to have your grandchildren hear what's in it; before their parents buy them a cell phone.

Familiar Dynasty Warriors Translation

I was introduced to the world of Romance of the Three Kingdoms thanks to the Dynasty Warriors game, and decided I wanted to read to original work that the games were based on. This is actually the second copy of the story that I've bought; the first had a drastically different translation style -- Liu Bei was Liu Pei, Guan Yu was Kuan Yu, etc -- and it was off-putting enough that I found it difficult to follow.

For those who are here because of the same reason I was, you'll be pleased to know that this printing shares the vast majority of the translations with the games we know and love. Sun Ce is Sun Ce, not Sun T'se!

Grew up playing the games based on romance of three kingdoms. It's great to finally read the original. Full of drama, humor, adventure and insight into modern china. Great work of historical fiction.

It may be ponderous to read, and possibly difficult to keep track of everyone, but it was an enjoyable read for me.

After watching Red Cliff I had the desire to read more of the before and after. This book filled that desire.

A much needed perspective on Jimi's life

I bought this book yesterday and finished it today. I have always felt, for reasons I could never really explain, that Jimi had a kindred spirit with my own. His father's recollections on Jimi's early life let me know why. I'm so glad Mr. Al Hendrix wrote this book. The lies about Jimi are legion. I remember in the 60's that most of what I heard about him had to do with drugs. It's a real shame that you have to explore a person's life like a detective (in a country with a supposedly "free" press) to find out what they were really like. There is one thing I really liked about the Hendrix family the book revealed; their free and easy interactions with non-blacks. No wonder Jimi's music and message was universal. In a time when blacks and whites seem to be once again withdrawing into their own groups I found the Hendrix family to be very refreshing. Being black myself I totally reject the pressures brought against me to participate only in things stamped with the "black" seal of approval. And I'd like to salute Al Hendrix for being a real father and taking care of his family, even children he didn't sire. A lot of men today wouldn't do what he did. Jimi was very fortunate to have such a father and I think he knew it. Thank you Mr. Hendrix for sharing your life and that of your son with us on a more intimate level. I for one will always love Jimi and hold a fondness for him in my heart. And now for you as well.

Al's 'Bad' Memory

I know it's wrong to criticise the dead, but this book is very much written through bright rosey red coloured spectacles. Al was getting on in years when he collaborated on this book and I suspect a lot of it was very much taken from one-to-one chats between Al and his 'ghost writer'; but unfortunately the book appears to have been very much influenced by the step -daughter from hell (and not a blood relative of Jimi)....one Janie Hendrix. Therefore, although Al's early memories of Jimi as a child and early adolescent are interesting and have some value, his assertions that Leon was not his child and how much Jimi was fond of his 'little sister Janie' devalue the rest of the book. Even if Leon was not Al's child, he was Lucille's son and that makes him Jimi's blood half-brother....which is a damn site closer to Jimi than Janie will ever be (he only met Janie on a couple of occasions)...........I suspect that Janie poisoned Al's mind at the time that this book was written with one thing in mind...Al's will and inheritance and the control of Jimi's music...which all spells one word......GREED. Unfortunately her scheming paid off, as Al effectively disowned Leon and gifted more or less evrything to Janie (including the rights to Jimi's music).

Finally, I am sure Al loved Jimi in his own way and I am sure Jimi had some affection for Al, but it is all overplayed in this book and Jimi told a lot of people that Al beat him quite badly when he was growing up and Kathy Etchingham in particular recalls a number of occasions when Al was not exactly a loving father..........however times were very hard for Al and Jimi (and Leon) and it is unfair to be too hard on Al in the early days....and to some degree in later life when I suspect he was slightly senile and therefore very susceptible to Janie's worm tonguery.

Surprisingly low-key personality for a rock star!!!

I liked it and I read it in 2 days. I was amazed to read that jimi Hendrix, an all time rock and roll star, was by his dad's account, such an even keeled, mild-mannered, and generous person. So impressive given as per dads account that his mom was a self-involved, reckless, and absentee parent and dad was a transient mainly benevolent old soul forever trying to find his way as well. I did expect to learn more about jimi and the music direction he chose, the kinds of things that he was passionate about and other stuff about his rock experience. I did laugh when I read that hendrix's dad thought the Beatles were little girls when he first saw and heard them on TV-which was after he heard his own sons first album. I also laughed when I read about how jimi told his dad to not worry about his terrible singing as "all the music then featured a driving beat with a singer who was just shouting and not singing with any sense of melody or tone". Would have liked to hear more about jimis band experience while living with his dad-up until he went to the army.

Good college romance

I received this book in exchange for my honest review the two main character meet one day n start building their relationship n they have two breakups getting baxck together. She has a moment where she does break down and say she needs help n gets it n starts a new better relationship with Corey the ending leaves you wanting to find out what happens next

I enjoyed reading this book very much. The story was interesting and the writing was good. It can be read as a stand-alone book & the author did a great job of making sure everything was explained. I would recommend this to my book friends.

Good College Romance Book

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This book started kind of slow for me but once I was able to get into it, I was unable to put it down. Mackenzie spent her freshman year of college avoiding parties and fun because of her boyfriend. Once he breaks up with her she returns to school determined to catch up on what she missed out on. Once she meets Corey, things start to spiral out of control. Mackenzie and Corey have their share of ups and down and breakups, however in the end they are able to find the perfect balance. This book is a story about finding oneself without losing oneself in the process. As the characters discover, the easy answer is not always the right answer.
