Wonderful resource!

I love this book! I especially like the coverage given to cultural and other aspects other than simply language. It is also noteworthy that colloquial Czech is covered here, which, unfortunately, is not covered as deeply in any other Czech grammar that I know of, even "Colloquial Czech". There are several levels at which one can learn. Having been a learner of Czech for several years, I can state somewhat authoritatively that this is probably one of the best Czech grammars available. Of course, the Routledge grammar is probably more in-depth and complete, but this is better at just getting you started. Also, the Fronek dictionary (as is mentioned in the book) is probably the best dictionary (and in my opinion, one of the best dictionaries for any language) available for Czech. I say this, being the owner of several hundred of the top most touted dictionaries for languages throughout the world. (In the Czech-to-English section, there is a number reference associated with each word, which refers to a paradigm section in the dictionary with many word charts, which gives you information on exactly how each each word is conjugated/inflected, along with its own peculiar anomalies, if any.) There are also many aspects of Czech culture and grammar in this book not covered in other books, and for this reason, this book is quite a gem.

One other thing I would like to mention that so far as a side note, which I have not found in any book (at least so far in my reading), but is a useful little tidbit of information, especially for those getting into love/like relationships, which jogged my memory as I found some phrases in the book. "Miluju te" (sorry, Amazon doesn't appear to be able to handle haceks), "I love you" is a phrase that generally is only used between spouses or extremely close connections. Even "M�m te r�d(a)", "I love/like you" is fairly strong and is used between family members and others as "I love you", but is not as strong as the former phrase. There isn't really any adequate translation for either of these phrases into English.

One more thing should be mentioned. Many of the nuances and tricks of Czech for English speakers to learn are set forth in this book. This is especially valuable for obvious reasons. Other grammar texts do not do this. This is the mark of someone who has just learned something and can teach it well to others in his/her situation (in this instance, learning Czech as English speakers). One example is how the author shows how English speakers get tripped up with tense in Czech, which is actually very simple, tense-wise. In English, on the other hand, we have many many more tenses than in the Slavic languages. Many English tenses can be summed up with a single Czech tense. This is clearly laid out. I'm surprisingly very pleased with this text.

A huge help

My husband and I are planning to travel to Prague next summer and this book has been a huge help in preparing us for the trip. We know so much more about Czech customs and the language now than we did before. I'm sure my Czech won't be perfect, but it's much nicer feeling confident about my ability to understand and communicate. Since the book is written in a way that is easy to understand, our son has been enjoying the book as well. Nicely done, I highly recommend this book.

I have studied the czech language and have yet to find a simple, complete collection that can take me from "dobry den" to finding my way around Prague! I am still working my way through this great guide, but I have already learned new words, characteristics of the czech culture, and improved my pronounciation (my czech friends agree.) I can't wait to travel with my new Czech Reference guide!

This book presents the text of the Declaration, which had been drafted after a thorough process of interreligious and international consultation by Hans Kung, with a commentary explaining how it came to take its present form and what it sets out to do. Dr. Karl-Josef Kuschel, Hans Kung's Tubingen colleague, describes the historical background to the Parliament and gives an account of its proceedings.

About the Author
Hans Kung is Emeritus Professor of Ecumenical Theology at the University of Tubingen and President of the Global Ethic Foundation. He is the author of numerous best selling books including On Being a Christian (Harper Collins).Karl-Josef Kuschel is Professor at the University of T�bingen. He is one of the leading liberal Catholic theologians in Germany and is a younger colleague and former pupil of Hans K�ng.

All those belief systems agree!

In the course of preparing to write a book, I found I had to consider intersections of science, Buddhism, Taoism, and Judeo-Christian beliefs. Then I came across this gem. It made my task seem small. Imagine hundreds of religions (about 500, if I recall correctly) all seeking to find common cause!

The Buddhists caused a temporary fuss. They insisted they did not have to believe in a supreme being. However, everyone made it over that bump in the road. They all agreed with principles that were progressive for the time. They'd be progressive for our time if governments implemented them.

It's customary, with regard to religions at least, for a belief system to profess peace, only to have some government use it to aid its latest war. Now that I think of it, that's been the history of governments' use of science. At least it has been since Leonardo tried to please his patron.

I believe you'll find it interesting to read the statement in this book and the bit of history about writing it. It spells out some of the cultural change they all thought was necessary. I found it encouraging that all those diverse people arrived at common conclusions. Their agreements are not abstract, but quite specific and clearly stated. If only those who "didn't come to Washington to compromise" could do that in the United States congress.

I'd have given the book a top rating if it had not made me sad to think of the obvious principles that should be given universal agreement, but instead are ignored.

Kung is an interesting fellow. This book started my rewarding search to know him better.

What makes Craig Ferguson...

...the funniest, most entertaining and by far the most appealing of all these guys (Letterman & Leno included)--maybe of all the guys I've ever encountered in real life--shines through every page of this unputdownable, occasionally harrowing, tenderly hilarious memoir. It's all here: Ferguson's playful wit, his utter lack of pomposity, his willingness to laugh at his own farty (as he might put it) humanity along with everyone else's, and his endearingly chivalrous streak apparent even when he's at the abyss of bad behavior (which he captures in all its rawness). If you're not a fan yet, you will be. So buy the book and change your bedtime...or at least set your TIVO. In this case, Scotland's loss is most definitely America's gain.

A Must Read....

I've always loved Craig Ferguson as a comedian, but now I have a newfound respect for him as a person. American on Purpose delivers a funny and touching account of his journey from Glasgow to Hollywood. He is honest about about his alcoholism and drug use, his decision to become a US citizen, and everything in between. This is a surprisingly candid and literate memoir, a refreshing change from the usual celebrity tell-all.

I Wish I Could Write Like He Does ... Or Talk Like He does

The idea of a little boy growing up far across an ocean and eyeing the gleaming shores of this country has been tarnished of late by our misadventures as a superpower. And now, suddenly and with the power that only a good writer can summon, it's back.

Odd, isn't it, that America never looks so good as through the eyes of someone who wasn't born into the privilege of this particular Democracy?

I read this book in a single sitting; starting the journey with a host who escorts us as easily through his life as he does through an hour of television every night. From the mean streets of a mean childhood, to the gilded halls of Washington, and through the backdoor that led him to television stardom ... with a long and poignant stopover in the haze of alcoholism. What an adventure! If you don't empathize with the man when he shakes his fist at the stars in the middle of the desert and chooses uncertainty just for the hell of it, you're not living right.

WIth the gentle hindsight of a man who has come out the other side of that haze, Ferguson is kind to virtually all the people in this adventure ... and Lord knows, it's uncommon enough for someone who makes their living in Hollywood to act that way.

This is a terrific read. Enjoy it.

This was a perfect launch pad to begin as a CMIO. I didn't even know which questions to ask until I read this book . The chapter by Marc Chasin was particularly on point. It's a quick read and worth every penny.

I feel like a complete idiot for paying money for this then ...

Deceptive! I pre-ordered. When it arrived, discovered the patterns were already in the The Unofficial Harry Potter Knits Magazine (2013). I wouldn't have minded if this had been made clear in the description but it was NOT. And the patterns themselves now have different names. For ex. the blue capelet on the cover here is called Ghostly Cloak. in HP Knits: The Grey Lady's Cloak (as in Helena Ravenclaw). "Thinking Cap" = "Dumbledore's Smoking Hat". "Giant's Sweater" = "Hagrid's Sweater." "Inverse Socks" = "Fred and George's Socks". "A Cap Full of Caps" = "E.L.F. Cap". "Owl Cardigan" = "Ginny's Cardigan". "Griffin Socks" = "Dragon's Egg Socks" (From 'The Goblet of Fire'). "Enchanted Forest Scarf" - "Forbidden Forest Scarf" (which borders Hogwart's). "Rich Earth Mitts" = "Pomona's Mitts (as in Professor Pomona Sprout). "Shimmering Cloak" = "Ignotus Peverell's Cloak" (IE 'The Cloak of Invisibility). "Midnight Mitts" = "Sword of Gryffindor Mitts" (Seriously??!!! that's a major hide!) as well as "Rendez-Vouz Mitts" - "Hermione's Time Turner Mitts" (they even have the letter "H"!!!) "Lacy Cloak" = "Lestrange Cloak" as in Bellatrix Lestrange). Yes.... I feel like a complete idiot for paying money for this then waiting for it. Goodness knows, I already had it. In 2013!!!

Excellent Collection of Previously-Published Patterns From Wizard-Themed Interweave Magazine

The introduction to KNITTING WIZARDRY informs us that these "magical patterns were first published by Interweave in a publication that must not be named." That publication is, of course, the special 2013 Interweave knitting magazine that was titled "The Unofficial Harry Potter Knits". If you own the magazine, you don't need this book--all 27 patterns are in the magazine, and the magazine has at least three additional patterns.

In the book, all of the original pattern titles and descriptions have been changed to delete the Harry Potter references (e.g., "Order of the Phoenix Winged Vest" is now the "Aviary Vest"; "Hagrid's Sweater" is now the "Giant's Sweater"). Without a doubt, the pattern collection isn't nearly as much fun without the original Harry Potter theme, even though the photos with models made up to resemble the series' characters are still there.

Most of the 27 garments in the collection are knit from laceweight, sock weight, sportweight, or DK yarn, on U.S. sizes 3-6 needles. My absolute favorite is the "Tracery Vest", a charted Fair Isle V-neck pullover that resembles Gothic stained glass windows--it uses multicolored yarn to represent the window glass panels, and this makes the design somewhat easier to knit. I bought the yarn to be able to make this one for myself!

Other patterns that I like a lot are the "Owl Cardigan" (a complex lace cable resembling an owl's head runs down the middle of the cardigan back); the "Sorcery Sweater" (a long-sleeved, masculine unisex pullover with an elaborately interlocking Celtic cable design in front); the "Mermaid's Song" shawl (a lace shawlette with a wave pattern and bead-tipped fringe); the "Inky Sweater" (a long-sleeved, masculine unisex pullover with an elaborately cabled body); the "Lady of the House Wrapper" (a pretty shrug with an allover diamond lace pattern and an unusual front closing treatment); the "Petal Socks" (traditional top-down socks with twisted-stitch patterning); and the "Lacy Cloak" (a sleeved and collared lace cloak, with body knit in one piece to the underarms, then divided into two fronts and a back--definitely a project for advanced knitters).

All in all, this is an excellent pattern collection, worthy of a 5-star rating even though the patterns have already been published in magazine format. I only wish that Interweave could have found a way to warn prospective purchasers (like myself), that the patterns aren't new ones.

These are most of the same patterns as in the The Unofficial Harry Potter Knits, Special Issue 2013, but there were 32 patterns in that magazine, and there's 27 in this one. The projects are lovely, and any Harry Potter fan would love this.

I gave it three stars, because no where in the description does it mention that these patterns were already published as the magazine. The interweave knits website mentions that there has been some editing to them, but I'd imagine the errata for the patterns would serve the same purpose.
