Good in theory...

Okay, I was incredibly psyched to get this book, and when I received it, you couldn't tear me away from it for hours. I read the entire thing, making notes all over it for actual application. The only other soap book I had read up to that point was Basic Soap Making, which is really helpful, but I was ready to up my game. The beautiful and stunning directives in this book really turned on my inner creativity, and I was ready to get to business. However, the actual application of the techniques are not as seamless as one would expect.

I immediately tried two different recipes from this book. The first was the "pumpkin swirl" recipe. Then I tried the coffee soap recipe. Both of them had the exact same problem, and I will try my best to walk you through the issue.

Firstly, I only used the EXACT ingredients listed by the author, who incidentally owns Brambleberry, which she guiltlessly plugs every chance she gets. The fragrance oils and specialty ingredients you can only get at Brambleberry. The delivery time is unbelievably long, so expect to wait at least a week before you can do any of the recipes you have saved up with those specialty ingredients. I waited a week and a half for one fragrance oil, which was supposedly in stock, but they didn't ship until 5 days after my order placed.

I decided to start with the pumpkin recipe because it was one of the easier color techniques. It's a basic swirl made by pouring, and I've had enough soap success to figure I could do that one easily. However, I failed at this recipe SIX times. I followed it to the T, when I started looking online for help. Then I emailed Anne-Marie herself at Brambleberry. The problem was the same in every batch. As soon as I added the fragrance oil, the soap seized. I tried every single trick in the book to prevent this. I made sure both the oils and lye solution were the exact same temp of 115 degrees. I tried adding the FO before the Lye. I tried whisking boiling water as I added the FO. Nothing worked. I even joined an online forum and tried all their suggestions.

In the end, I emailed Brambleberry, explaining I was using a recipe from their book with all the exact ingredients in the exact method they had suggested and my recipe wasn't working at all. Unfortunately, the person that responded only repeated that I try the methods I already told them I had tried. When I responded that maybe they should actually read my email and try again, they suggested I use a different FO, even though it was THEIR FO that the recipe called for. Sigh.

Also, the most useful part of the whole book, aside from color techniques, is an in-depth look at the properties of the oils used in soap making. I found this section extremely useful. However, I noticed that in several recipes, Anne-Marie broke her own rules for using the oils. For instance, not using more then 25% palm oil in any recipe. In the recipe I was having trouble with, the palm oil was being used at 31%. After I adjusted the recipe based on the rules and used a completely different FO (from another company - wholesalesuppliesplus.com), I didn't have any more issues. Basically, the recipes are a nice starting point, but you might check the percentages and double-check the suggested FO to make sure it doesn't accelerate trace. To use the beautiful color patterns listed in the book, you need to have the longest trace possible to give you time to work.

In general, I feel that this book is a great addition to my soap-making library, but certainly NOT the definitive book on soap making. A nice guideline for techniques, but not perfection in recipes.

The only Soaping book you'll need

I started soaping this year and have read at least 8 soaping books to date. Just received this book today and looked through every page. I thought this book would be strictly on design techniques but it turns out to be a comprehensive book that even beginners would appreciate. Unlike other soaping books, this one is RICH with step by step pictures of the cold process as well as the final product. Anne-Marie covers safety guidelines, equipment, oils, colorants, essential oils and fragrances as well creative molds, additives and swirls. If you are want to buy only one soaping book, this one will give you all the information you need to get started and advance in the soap crafting passion.

Similar to other soap crafting books

After reading this book, I felt that, while it was a reasonable book on soap making, it did not add much new material of significance to the current soap making literature. There are a number of recipes included within this book, but not much explanation as to why different oils were used in each recipe and why a particular combination was used. The section on new/unique swirls was interesting, but I do wish the author had gone into more detail on what molds were used for which swirls and the limitations of each. I feel like this is a section where the author could have really pushed this book beyond what others have published, but alas, that did not turn out to be the case.

Overall, this is a fine general soap crafting book that does focus on the coloring technique that are now popular. However, these techniques can be found with a simple Google search, and I'm not sure that having them in book form is really worth the purchase of this book.

This book was LIFE CHANGING!!!!!!!!!

This was a great book! It changed my life! I read it after getting involved with someone who admitted that they were 'commitmentphobic.' For whatever reason, even after knowing this, I still got involved. I felt drawn to this person like never before. Anyway, I was crushed when the 'relationship' suddenly changed and ended. I was left feeling very confused by their behavior, as well as by their reappearances in my life. I couldn't believe after reading this, how acurately it depicted the events that took place between my partner and me. It felt as if the authors were writing my dating biography.
Well, I now realize that my partners weren't all to blame. I kept choosing partners who weren't completely available for a long-term commitment. I longed for love, and yet kept running the other way, wanting "my space", when any relationship I was in got too 'close'-- or when it seemed like the other person wanted more than I was willing to give. Thus, unintentionally, I began to seek out persons who simply couldn't give the time or consistency to a warm, honest, and balanced relationship. You may think, like I used to, that you just haven't found "THE ONE". But trust me, if you have gone from relationship to relationship; if you or your partner suddenly have ended things and gone the other way; you have to come to realize that the issue is much deeper than it may seem. This book forces you to look at yourself in the mirror! Don't read this, if you want to continue pursuing 'fantasy partners!' Only read it if you want to GET REAL with yourself and your dating history!!! Get real..so you can get the real and committed relationship that you desire.

Not a completely useless book...but close.

This book starts out well enough, it defines the word commitmentphobic (anyone scared of a commitment) and then discusses active and passive conflicts. It then talks about characteristics of each type -- things a person with active conflicts typically does in relationship, and the same for those with passive conflicts. You'll probably start to see some familiar behaviors here. Then it'll explain how everyone has commitment issues to some extent, both passive and active, and how it's only a problem if it interferes with your relationships.

You say to yourself, great. This is all very reassuring. So what do I do about it?

For the next 200 pages (it's about 300 pages total), the book offers NO practical advice. Instead it begins to use "commitmentphobic" as a dirty word, and starts to tell stories of relationships. You read story after story thinking "Hey, I see some of myself here, I wonder what they'll recommend to resolve this situation...". You get to the end of the story and there's no advice, just another story. You get to the end of the chapter and there's no advice, just another chapter full of stories. And regardless of what they say, not all the stories are of commitmentphobic people.

The book also practices a lot of tough love. In several cases it appears to be saying "Anyone who is willing to commit to you is the person you should commit to. There is no perfect person, no person of your dreams, no one you should be holding out for. Growing up means giving up on your dreams and settling down."

Finally, the last few chapters of the book attempt to give some practical advice, but it ends up being contradictory. Here's what one of the last chapters said, boiled down to a few sentences.

Acknowledge you have commitment issues, but don't talk to your partner about them. Ok, do talk to your partner about them, but don't cry. Actually, don't talk to your partner about them because that'll create more intimacy. Wait, do talk to them about it, but only when you're ready to break up with them.

What????

In the end the only real practical piece of advice they give is to get counseling. Not very useful after buying the book and reading 300 pages.

I'll save you trouble and give you the good stuff out of the book. Notice how short it is.

Active avoiders pursue hard at first and then draw away, putting up boundaries. Passive avoiders fall hard, but always for the wrong people (active avoiders). You're falling for those people because it's "safe" to love them, because you know it won't turn into a real relationship. No one necessarily falls into one camp or the other, you can switch between relationships or during a single relationship.

Everyone has commitment issues to some extent. If your issues hurt your relationships, take a cold hard look at your patterns and try to manage them. If you can't, seek counseling.

If only I had known....

Had I read this 2 years ago, I could have saved myself a lot of time, demoralizing heartache, frustration, and yes, money (living up to a committmentphobe's fantasies not only deflates your self-worth, but your bank account as well). Finally someone explained to me why after ending a relationship with a man who set up unreasonable boundaries, evaded talking about the future, withdrew emotionally, and maintained "friendships" with ex-lovers...I STILL COULDN'T STOP THINKING ABOUT THIS JERK! I knew that the fact I had not been able to let go was my problem and not his, and this book explained it very clearly: I'm just as afraid of committment as the obvious "committmentphobe", and it's been the emotional hook that's kept me from detaching. The chapter on Runners and Chasers could have been written about me and my ex, and I was the passive and willing participant in the push/pull dance.
I can congratulate myself for getting out after only a year of this nonsense. Moving on has been hell, but finding this book has been a huge help in taking the first step in resolving my own fears of sharing life with another person.
I hope that Carter and Sokol write some follow-up books to help those of us who truly want committed relationships but are afraid to realize them.

El autor tuvo mas de 10 a�os estudiando la historia de Egipcio y los rollos de Sinuhe. Es interesante notar que a pesar del hecho que la historia trata de sucesos que pasaran hace unos 3.000 a�os, nosotros podemos identificarnos con todo. Espero que todo el mundo tenga el privilegio de leer esta obra maestra. (Este repaso se refiere al "The Egyptian", lo cual es la misma historia, pero en ingles.)

No pueden dejar de leerlo

Sinuhe el Egipcio es una maravilla de libro al igual que todos los otros libros de Mika Waltari (los dos libros de Mikael Karajalka, El Sitio de Contantinopla, SPQR, etc). Resulta emocionante poder recorrer el Egipto de 3000 AC con una enorme cantidad de detalles, para los cuales Mika Waltari estudio muchos a�os la cultura egipcia. A partir de este libro se hizo una pelicula que es muy buena, pero el libro es realmente alucinante. Recomiendo este libro para aquellos que quieran conocer mas de la literatura de Mika Waltari.
