Amazon.com Review
Among the seminal texts of the 20th century, Nineteen Eighty-Four is a rare work that grows more haunting as its futuristic purgatory becomes more real. Published in 1949, the book offers political satirist George Orwell's nightmare vision of a totalitarian, bureaucratic world and one poor stiff's attempt to find individuality. The brilliance of the novel is Orwell's prescience of modern life--the ubiquity of television, the distortion of the language--and his ability to construct such a thorough version of hell. Required reading for students since it was published, it ranks among the most terrifying novels ever written.

Review
'It is a volley against the authoritarian in every personality, a polemic against every orthodoxy, an anarchistic blast against every unquestioning conformist... Nineteen Eighty-Four is a great novel and a great tract because of the clarity of its call, and it will endure because its message is a permanent one: erroneous thought is the stuff of freedom'-Ben Pimlott

The kind of distressing book you NEED to read...
By B. Alcat
Eric Arthur Blair was an important English writer that you probably already know by the pseudonym of George Orwell. He wrote quite a few books, but many believe that his more influential ones were "Animal farm" (1944) and "1984" (1948).In those two books he conveyed, metaphorically and not always obviously, what Soviet Russia meant to him.

I would like to make some comments about the second book, "1984". That book was written near his death, when he was suffering from tuberculosis, what might have had a lot to do with the gloominess that is one of the essential characteristics of "1984". The story is set in London, in a nightmarish 1984 that for Orwell might well have been a possibility, writting as he was many years before that date. Or maybe, he was just trying to warn his contemporaries of the dangers of not opposing the Soviet threat, a threat that involved a new way of life that was in conflict with all that the English held dear.

Orwell tried to depict a totalitarian state, where the truth didn't exist as such, but was merely what the "Big Brother" said it was. Freedom was only total obedience to the Party, and love an alien concept, unless it was love for the Party. The story is told from the point of view of Winston Smith, a functionary of the Ministry of Truth whose work involved the "correction" of all records each time the "Big Brother" decided that the truth had changed. The Party slogan said that "Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past", and they applied it constantly by "bringing up to date" the past so as to make it coincide with whatever the Party wanted.

From Winston Smith's point of view, many things that scare us are normal. For example, the omnipresence of the "Big Brother", always watching you, and the "Thought Police" that punishes treacherous thoughts against the Party. The reader feels the inevitability of doom that pervades the book many times, in phrases like "Thoughtcrime was not a thing that could be concealed forever. You might dodge successfully for a while, even for years, but sooner or later they were bound to get you".

Little by little, Winston begins to realize that things are not right, and that they should change. We accompany him in his attempt at subversion, and are unwilling witnesses of what that attempt brings about. This book is marked by hopelessness, but at the same time it is the kind of distressing book we all NEED to read...

Why do we need to read "1984"?. In my opinion, basically for two reasons. To start with, Orwell made in this book many observations that are no more merely fiction, but already things that manage to reduce our freedom. Secondly, and closelly linked to my first reason, this is a book that only gets better with the passing of time, as you can read in it more and more implications. One of Orwell's main reasons for writting this "negative utopia" might have been to warn his readers against communism, but many years after his death and the fall of communism, we can also interpret it as a caution against the excessive power of mass media, or the immoderate power of any government (even those who don't defend communism).

Technological innovation should be at the service of men, and allow them to live better lives, but it can be used against them. I guess that is one of Orwell's lessons, probably the most important one. All in all, I think you can benefit from reading this book. Because of that, I highly recommend it to you :)

Big Brother is watching you - read this book and see how!
By Shelley Gammon
George Orwell's classic was incredibly visionary. It is hardly fathomable that this book was written in 1948. Things that we take for granted today - cameras everywhere we go, phones being tapped, bodies being scanned for weapons remotely - all of these things were described in graphic detail in Orwell's book.
Now that we have the Internet and people spying on other people w/ webcams and people purposely setting up their own webcams to let others "anonymously" watch them, you can see how this culture can develop into the Orwellian future described in "1984."
If you've heard such phrases as "Big Brother," "Newspeak," and "thought crime" and wondered where these phrases came from, they came from this incredible, vivid and disturbing book.
Winston Smith, the main character of the book is a vibrant, thinking man hiding within the plain mindless behavior he has to go through each day to not be considered a thought criminal. Everything is politically correct, children defy their parents (and are encouraged by the government to do so) and everyone pays constant allegiance to "Big Brother" - the government that watches everyone and knows what everyone is doing at all times - watching you shower, watching you having sex, watching you eat, watching you go to the bathroom and ultimately watching you die.
This is a must-read for everyone.

The History Lesson You Wish you Had
By Julie
George Orwell's final novel, 1984, was written amidst the anti-communist hysteria of the cold war. But unlike Orwell's other famous political satire, Animal Farm, this novel is filled with bleak cynicism and grim pessimism about the human race. When it was written, 1984 stood as a warning against the dangerous probabilities of communism. And now today, after communism has crumbled with the Berlin Wall; 1984 has come back to tell us a tale of mass media, data mining, and their harrowing consequences.
It's 1984 in London, a city in the new berstate of Oceania, which contains what was once England, Western Europe and North America. Our hero, Winston Smith works in the Ministry of Truth altering documents that contradict current government statements and opinions. Winston begins to remember the past that he has worked so hard to destroy, and turns against The Party. Even Winston's quiet, practically undetectable form of anarchism is dangerous in a world filled with thought police and the omnipresent two-way telescreen. He fears his inevitable capture and punishment, but feels no compulsion to change his ways.
Winston's dismal observations about human nature are accompanied by the hope that good will triumph over evil; a hope that Orwell does not appear to share. The people of Oceania are in the process of stripping down the English language to its bones. Creating Newspeak, which Orwell uses only for examples and ideas which exist only in the novel. The integration of Newspeak into the conversation of the book. One of the new words created is doublethink, the act of believing that two conflicting realities exist. Such as when Winston sees a photograph of a non-person, but must reason that that person does not, nor ever has, existed.

The inspiration for Winston's work ,may have come from Russia. Where Stalin's right-hand man, Trotzky was erased from all tangible records after his dissention from the party. And the fear of telescreens harks back to the days when Stasi bugs were hooked to every bedpost, phone line and light bulb in Eastern Europe.

His reference to Hitler Youth, the Junior Spies, which trains children to keep an eye out for thought criminals- even if they are their parents; provides evidence for Orwell's continuing presence in pop culture. "Where men can't walk, or freely talk, And sons turn their fathers in." is a line from U2's 1993 song titled "The Wanderer".

Orwell assumes that we will pick up on these political allusions. But the average grade 11 student will probably only have a vague understanding of these due to lack of knowledge. It is even less likely that they will pick up on the universality of these happenings, like the fact that people still "disappear" without a trace every day in Latin America.

Overall, however, the book could not have been better written. Orwell has created characters and events that are scarily realistic. Winston's narration brings the reader inside his head, and sympathetic with the cause of the would-be-rebels. There are no clear answers in the book, and it's often the reader who has to decide what to believe. But despite a slightly unresolved plot, the book serves its purpose. Orwell wrote this book to raise questions; and the sort of questions he raised have no easy answer. This aspect can make the novel somewhat of a disappointment for someone in search of a light read. But anyone prepared to not just read, but think about a novel, will get a lot out of 1984.

1984, is not a novel for the faint of heart, it is a gruesome, saddening portrait of humanity, with it's pitfalls garishly highlighted. Its historic importance has never been underestimated; and it's reemergence as a political warning for the 21st century makes it deserving of a second look. Winston's world of paranoia and inconsistent realities is an eloquently worded account of a future we thought we buried in our past; but in truth may be waiting just around the corner.

Frontier Nomads of Iran: A Political and Social History of the Shahsevan (Cambridge Middle East Studies), by Richard Tapper

Based on three decades of ethnographic fieldwork and documentary research, this book traces the political and social history of the Shahsevan, one of the major nomadic peoples of Iran. It is a dramatic story, recounting the mythical origins of the tribes, their unification as a confederacy and their eventual decline. In its synthesis of anthropology and history, the book will make a major contribution to the study of the Middle East and Central Asia, and also to current debates on tribe-state relations and the relationship between identity and history.

Conservation Psychology: Understanding and Promoting Human Care for Nature, by Susan Clayton, Gene Myers

This textbook introduces the reader to the new and emerging field of Conservation Psychology, which explores connections between the study of human behavior and the achievement of conservation goals.

People are often cast as villains in the story of environmental degradation, seen primarily as a threat to healthy ecosystems and an obstacle to conservation. But humans are inseparable from natural ecosystems. Understanding how people think about, experience, and interact with nature is crucial for promoting environmental sustainability as well as human well-being.

The book first summarizes theory and research on human cognitive, emotional, and behavioral responses to nature and goes on to review research on people's experience of nature in wild, managed, and urban settings. Finally, it examines ways to encourage conservation-oriented behavior at both individual and societal levels. Throughout, the authors integrate a wide body of published literature to demonstrate how and why psychology is relevant to promoting a more sustainable relationship between humans and nature.

Review
"Overall, their book will likely serve as a main textbook for a dedicated course or seminar in conservation psychology. However, the book will also be of great value to researchers and those teaching related courses by providing greater depth of understanding of human drivers of pressing environmental issues." (Landscape Ecol, 2011)

"The book is an amply referenced survey, equally suitable as both an undergraduate textbook and a starting point for academics and professionals who wish to know more about how psychological research can inform their conservation work. I highly recommend its use in both of these contexts". (The Journal of Environmental Conservation, 2010)

"Conservation Psychology serves its audience and purpose well. It would be an excellent supplementary textbook to many conservation-focused graduate and undergraduate courses. Readers interested in conservation should find this volume fascinating, and will discover new insight into, as the authors note, the psychology of perseverance in the face of difficult times". (The Quarterly Review of Biology, 1 December 2010)

“I highly recommend their book to psychologists of all creeds as well as to conservation biologists, environmental scientists, policy-makers, teachers, and anyone concerned about our evolving place in nature.” (Conservation Psychology, August 2009)

"Clayton and Myres have written a timely book. It heralds a new area within psychology. I highly recommend their book to psychologists of all creeds as well as to conservation biologists."

Peter Verbeek, Science

I longed for a book like this, I'm enjoying every consultation I do! I't very useful for my interdisciplinary work with humans and wildlife, especially because I am not a psychologist but need some tools.

Good classroom in a book for newcomers
By J Bucknoff, PMP
This is a surprisingly useful book for newcomers to Visual Basic.NET. Buy it for the book, itself, not for the online presentation.
The book comes with an accompanying website with audio/visual presentation for each chapter consisting of a PowerPoint presentation along with audio. Warning: You can only view the presentation with a high speed broadband connection. Dial-up can only get the audio and sometimes not even the audio. The online presentations are fine, but the value comes from the book itself, not the online presentation.
I usually shy away from books with phrases like "In a weekend", "in 24 hours", "hour-a-day crash course" etc. You really can't learn a new programming language in a few hours. HOWEVER, THESE BOOKS ARE AN EXCEPTION. The authors don't try to convince you that you can expect to learn VB.NET in a weekend. If you do all the lessons (some of which may take a bit more than an hour) plus try to do a few original applications on your own, from scratch, you WILL get a very good foundation of the subjects being taught. It will take about 4 - 6 weeks to go through the entire book (not 24 hours or a weekend, like other books promise), based on 60 - 90 minutes a day 5 or 6 days a week.
I own both the VB.NET and the ASP.NET (which is also VB.NET based) books and recommended them to my students who wanted to learn VB.NET.
This books is designed for people who don't have the money or the time to attend a live, in-class course on the VB.NET. The authors anticipate, in advance, some of the questions you might ask to a live instructor if you were learning VB.NET in a classroom environment. According to the authors, they have taken their own experience as instructors and put that experience into the book. It works pretty well.
Two caveats:
(1) the book doesn't cover everything about .NET or about VB.NET or about the .NET Framework. It's provides a self-study, introductory course on VB.NET. If you complete the book, then you will be in good shape to take on some more advanced topics such as the details of ADO.NET (an entire subject in itself, check out Murach Publisher's Murach's VB.NET Database Programming with ADO.NET by Doug Lowe, Anne Prince - ISBN: 1890774197 for that) and ASP.NET (check out Wiley Publisher's ASP.NET in 60 Minutes a Day by Glenn Johnson, ISBN: 0-471-43023-4 for that or Mike Murach Publisher's Murach's ASP.NET Web Programming with VB.NET by Doug Lowe, Anne Prince ISBN: 1890774200 for that).
(2) The online presentations are only available to broadband subscribers. However, even without the videos, this would be a great introductory book for beginners who cannot take a classroom course on Web development using VB.NET and ASP.NET.

An excellent book let down by poor support
By A Customer
Visual Basic.Net in 60 Minutes reads well from the beginning. The tutorial-style presentation is an excellent idea, with each chapter supported by an introductory streaming video presentation by Bruce Barstow, hosted on Wiley's web site. The only problem is that the video intros don't work after chapter 3 which is a real let-down. Wiley's "Technical Support" has, as yet, produced no response, despite repeated emails plus a not inexpensive international phone call to have this issue rectified.
In summary, an excellent read for a programmer with some VB experience moving across to this VERY different world of VB.NET, but will disappoint anyone intending to use the advertised on-line lectures until (if/when??) Wiley get their act together & get these videos working beyond chapter 3!

Sallie Ann Glassman Mambo, author of Vodou Visions, owner of The Island of Salvation Botanica in New Orleans, Louisiana. A respectful, clear, and much-needed book that honors the creativity and resilience of African American traditions. McQuillar's discussions of the meaning of practices and ingredients underline the symbols, legacies, and worldviews encoded within the spells, and help people to empower themselves with understanding.

Chapter 1: What Is Rootwork?

Rootwork is a form of folk magick that uses the elements of nature to create change in ourselves, others, or our environment. It is an African-American form of shamanism that makes use of herbs, stones, rocks, and other organic material to heal the body or the mind, or to solve a problem. Like all other forms of shamanism, Rootworkers believe that we can use the unseen forces of nature to manipulate the tangible world.

Rootwork is also known as "Hoodoo" in the southern part of the United States. The word Hoodoo is probably derived from the word juju, an African word meaning "magic," or from Voodoo, a corrupted version of the Fon word Vodun, meaning "spirit" or "god." But unlike Vodun, Lukumi, Candomble, Shango, Batque, etc., Rootwork is not a religion. It has no pantheon or priesthood. It refers only to a set of healing and spell practices, and the practitioner can be whatever religion they wish. The theology behind the spells has been lost, thus there are no formal initiations to become a Rootworker. However, a good practitioner is traditionally referred to as Doctor, Mother, Uncle, or Aunt out of respect for their vast problem-solving knowledge.

Prior to the great migration of blacks to urban cities, these shamans were equally feared and respected, and usually lived away from the "regular folks" and made a profitable business off people who would sneak to see them under the cloak of darkness for help in resolving their issues. Most people lived by the saying "You want salvation, go to church. You want something done, go to the Rootworker."

Rootwork also served a practical purpose in the black community. Many Africans had experience working with herbs in their homeland and transmitted their botanical knowledge to their children. This information was passed on orally and was used to cure the sick and ailing. The most common afflictions Rootworkers treated were smallpox and digestive disorders, by boiling down the roots of certain herbs like the spikenard (hyptis suaveolens) or the sensitive plant (mimosa pudica) and making a tonic for their clients to drink.

All blacks in the South had to know basic healing techniques because traditional health care was too expensive for slaves to afford. In fact, many whites couldn't afford a traditional doctor either, and would often turn to their slaves' botanical knowledge for cures.

Native Americans and Rootwork

African slaves would often seek refuge among Native Americans because they had a similar worldview and they were willing to teach them how to survive in the New World. Although Africans were knowledgeable about African plants and their uses, they had no idea what to do with the herbs found in this strange land. Native Americans taught them the properties of local herbs and roots. The depiction of Native American chiefs and warriors on the packages of many "luck drawing" floor washes are testimony to the impact Native Americans had on rootwork.

These floor washes are simply a combination of water mixed with different perfumes and contain no herbs or roots at all. Most people don't read the ingredients in these products but just assume their effectiveness because of the clever packaging. Certainly if there is an image of a Native American on it, the product must be "magical," right? When, in fact, it's about as magical as Mop-n-Glow.

Rootwork Today

When African Americans migrated north, many left Rootwork behind. They were seeking better opportunities and a more sophisticated way of living, and Rootwork was considered "backward" or "country" and was frowned upon. This theme was dealt with in Julie Dash's cinematic masterpiece, Daughters of the Dust.

As standard medical care became more available, fewer people had need for the Rootworkers. But many still consulted them to perform divination or spell work.

Today, because of miseducation and the media's negative portrayal of any spiritual system based in Africa, most people avoid Rootwork. Everything that is African is feared, ignored, and rejected because of a deep and painful history of erasure of Africa as a major contributor to world culture. Even with the vast knowledge accumulated in the last century, when most people think of African spirituality and its practices in the New World, the mind usually conjures up images of spooky witchdoctors, bloody cannibalistic rituals, and evil curses. The media still transmits this propaganda through cartoons and movies, especially in the horror genre such as The Serpent and the Rainbow, Child's Play, Voodoo Dawn, and Tales from the Crypt to name a few.
A case in point is Webster's dictionary definition of Hoodoo:

Hoodoo: 1. voodoo 2. bad luck 3. A person or thing that brings bad luck.

Inaccuracies such as this pervade our culture, resulting not only in a negative psychological effect on African Americans and others in the Diaspora, but also in preventing others from understanding the true nature of these practices. This book is an attempt to correct these inaccuracies by placing Rootwork in its proper historical, cultural, and spiritual context.

Very little meat to this book
By Celene
This book has very little meat to it - it is a skinny book with big print and it really qualifies more like an essay on the subject instead of a book. The information is very basic and simplistic and it completely misses the point on the more subtle complexities behind rootworking. The impression I get is the author just did a quick internet search and then gathered what she found in an essay and voila - book. It may be that she knows a lot on this subject, but her writting does not reflect it. Some of the spells here are more common knowledge and old wives tales than actual rootworking spells.

All in all - this book is a waste of money. If you are looking for information on the subject just about any book out there on Hoodoo and Herbal magick is better than this book. Hell, if you do a google search on Rootworking, you will probably get more information than you would in this book.

Very Vague
By durmac
I bought this book to introduce myself to a part of my culture, but while the history of Hoodoo was ok (could have been a little more detailed), the spells were very vague. A beginning pratitioner would not do well to use this book because of the vagueness of the spell instructions & the inability to contact the author (her contact info does not work--tried several times including doing an online search). This book is ok as a quick, but not as a sufficient, resource tool. Use it for a brief intro to Hoodoo & nothing more. I would advise spending the extra money on a really indepthed book on Hoodoo tradition & spells to get a good understanding of the history & pratice before delving into this dynamic culture.

Like the earlier editions of Literature: An Introduction to Reading and Writing, the new seventh edition is in part a carefully chosen anthology. Most of the works here are by American, British, and Canadian authors, but there are also a number of ancient and medieval writers, along with writers who lived in or came from France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Ceylon, and Indonesia, together with authors who represent backgrounds of Latino, American Indian, and Chinese culture. In total, 304 authors are represented, including ten anonymous authors. One hundred eighty-four of the authors—roughly sixty percent—were born after 1900. Of the eighty writers born since 1935, forty-two are women, or fifty-two percent. If one counts only the number of authors born after the end of World War II (1945), the percentage of women goes up dramatically to seventy percent.

The book includes a total of 505 separate works—sixty-two stories, 423 poems, and twenty plays and scenes. Each work is suitable for discussion either alone or in comparison. Ten stories, thirty-seven poems, and two dramas are new in this edition. For purposes of comparison, the works in two genres by a number of writers are included—specifically Atwood, Crane, Glaspell, Hughes, Poe, Shakespeare, Updike, and Walker. In addition, Faulkner and Munro are each represented by two stories, and Shakespeare and Ibsen are represented by two plays—Shakespeare in Chapters 27 and 28, and Ibsen in Chapter 31. There are four stories by Edith Wharton in Chapter 11, the chapter on the career in fiction. There are multiple selections of poems by many poets.

A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF THE SEVENTH EDITION

FLEXIBILITY. The seventh edition reaffirms a principle to which Literature: An Introduction to Reading and Writing is dedicated—flexibility. The earlier editions have been used for introduction-to-literature courses, genre courses, and both composition and composition-and-literature courses. Adaptability and flexibility have been the keys to this variety. Instructors can use the book for classroom discussions, panel discussions, essay or paragraph-length writing and study assignments, and special topics not covered in class.

FICTION. The fiction section consists of ten chapters. Chapter 2 is a general introduction to fiction while Chapters 3-10—the "topical" chapters central to each section of the book—introduce students to such important topics as structure, character, point of view, and theme. Chapter 11 consists of four stories by Edith Wharton, and Chapter 12 contains seven stories for additional study and enjoyment.

Readers will note that some of the new stories are classic—like those by Faulkner, Petronius, Chekhov, and Wharton—and some, such as those by Munro and Bradbury, are well on their way to becoming classic. The new stories complement the fifty-two stories, such as those by Carver, Crane, Glaspell, Gilman, Hawthorne, Joyce, Laurence, Porter, and Twain, that are retained from the sixth edition.

POETRY. The thirteen poetry chapters are arranged similarly to the fiction chapters. Chapter 13 is introductory. Chapters 14-23 deal with topics such as diction, symbolism, imagery, tone, and myth. Chapter 24 is the poetic careers chapter, consisting of selections by Wordsworth, Dickinson, and Frost. Chapter 25 contains 129 poems for additional study and enjoyment. Brief biographies of the anthologized poets are included in Appendix II to make the poetry section parallel with the drama and fiction sections.

Poetry selections are taken from poets of late medieval times to those of our own day, including poets such as the anonymous writer of "Sir Patrick Spens," Wyatt, Queen Elizabeth I, Shakespeare, Donne, Dryden, Pope, Gray, Wordsworth, Byron, Keats, Tennyson, Rossetti, Hopkins, Pound, Yeats, Eliot, Layton, Lowell, Brooks, Birney, and Clifton. Thirty-seven poems are new here. They represent a variety of American and British poets, most of whom are widely recognized. Agizeros, Carruth, Collins, Creeley, Davison, Dunn, Griffin, Kinnell, Merriam, Stevenson, and Terranova come readily to mind. Two of the poets were American presidents (Jimmy Carter and Abraham Lincoln). Younger poets, most of them with great distinctions to their credit, are Agueros, Edelman, Harjo, Hospital, and Peacock. One of the poets new in the seventh edition is Micheal O'Siadhail (pronounced me-hall oh-sheel), who has achieved distinction not only for his poetry but also for his governmental service in his native Ireland. Of special note is the inclusion for the first time of a number of nineteenth-century poets who were chosen for poems illustrating various aspects of American life. (Please see the first category in the Topical and Thematic Table of Contents). These are Bryant, Emerson, Ingham, Lincoln, Melville, and Whinier. Along with the poems included for the first time, the seventh edition of Literature: An Introduction to Reading and Writing retains 386 poems that were included in the sixth edition.

DRAMA. In the drama section Chapter 26 is introductory. Chapters 27 through 29 deal with tragedy, comedy, and realism and nonrealism. At the suggestion of a number of instructors who use film in their courses—a unique feature begun in the third edition—Chapter 30, on film, is retained, and the discussion matches those in the other chapters. The scenes from Citizen Kane, by Welles and Mankiewicz, and The Turning Point, by Laurents, have been retained. Chapter 31 is the special career chapter on Henrik Ibsen. There is no "Plays for Additional Study and Enjoyment" chapter to match Chapters 12 and 25 because most plays are so lengthy that adding more would extend the book beyond reasonable limits within a one-volume format.

Nine of the longer plays from the previous edition have been kept in this edition because they.are important in an introductory study of drama (Oedipus the King, Hamlet, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Love Is the Doctor, Death of a Salesman, The Glass Menagerie, Mulatto, A Dollhouse, An Enemy of the People). To this number, the important medieval The Second Shepherds'Play and Welder's perennially popular Our Town have been added. These additions make the anthology more useful than in the past as the basis for a discussion of the history of dramatic literature. In an anthology of this scope, the seven short plays (Am I Blue, The Bear, Before Breakfast, Tea Party, The Visitatio Sepulchre, The More the Merrier, Trifles) are valuable because they may be covered in no more than one or two classroom hours, and also because they may be enlivened by having parts read aloud and acted by students. Indeed, the anonymous Visitatio Sepulchre and Keller's Tea Party are brief enough to permit classroom reading and discussion in a single period.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

CONTENTS. The Contents lists all the works and major discussion heads in the book. A new feature is the inclusion, following each entry, of a sentence containing a brief summation or impression of the work. It is hoped that these "guides" will interest students in approaching, anticipating, and reading the works.

TOPICAL AND THEMATIC TABLE OF CONTENTS. To make the seventh edition of Literature: An Introduction to Reading and Writing as flexible as possible, we have continued the Topical and Thematic Table of Contents. In this table, located immediately following the chapter-by-chapter Contents, a number of topics are provided, such as Hope and Renewal; Women; Men; Women and Men; Conformity and Rebellion; Endings and Beginnings, Innocence and Experience, and Race, Ethnicity, and Nationality. Under these topics, generous numbers of stories, poems, and plays are listed (many in a number of categories), to aid in the creation and study of topical or thematic units. In this edition, for the first time, references to the works of art in the Inserts are included along with the topics so that students may add visual references to their analyses of literature.

A special word is in order for the category "America in Peace, War, and Tribulation," which is first in the Topical and Thematic Table. After the attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001, it is fitting that a category of uniquely American topics be included for student analysis and discussion. Of course there cannot be a systematic and comprehensive examination of the background and thought that belongs to courses in American literature, but a selection of works that bear on American life and values is now particularly important. Some of the works describe an idealized America, but many also shed light on problems and issues that America has faced in the past and is facing today. A few of the works concern our country at its beginning; some reflect the life of the frontier and the Civil War; others introduce issues of minority culture; still others introduce subjects such as war, misfortune, personal anguish, regret, healing, reverence for the land, the symbolic value of work, nostalgia, love, prejudice, and relationships between parents and children. It is our hope that students study the listed works broadly, as general human issues also dealing with the complexity of life in the United States today.

QUESTIONS. Following each anthologized selection in the detailed chapters are study questions designed to help students in their exploration and understanding of literature. Some questions are factual and may be answered quickly. Others provoke extended thought and classroom discussion, and may also serve for both in-class and out-of-class writing assignments. At the ends of twenty-six chapters we include a number of more general "Special Topics for Writing and Argument about (Character, Symbolism, Tragedy, etc.)." Many of these are comparison-contrast topics, and a number of them—at least one in each chapter—are assignments requiring creative writing (for example, "Write a poem," or "Compose a s...

Excellent textbook contains excellent collection of short stories.
By homeowner, N. CA
I bought this as a college textbook and decided to keep it on my bookshelf.
The paperback is both a collection of short stories and a very informative guide to college level English 1A and 1B or 101 and 102 critical thinking and writing of papers.

Teach it, learn it, experience it, love it
By Mary-Jo Ferrara
Back in the day before I had to "disability retire" from teaching in a then community college, I was enraptured by the choices and breadth of the Roberts and Jacobs selections. I used the book teaching Honors Composition II (reading, in-class discussion, writing about mostly short stories, and using a "literary link" which I'd help students find to the subjects of their required research papers; ex: the "misfortunes" of the death penalty tied to Susan Glaspell's short story "A Jury of her Peers" and her play--same subject--"Trifles" both in the same edition). As years progressed and book prices skyrocketed, I sought the Roberts & Jacobs' Compact edition and found it a good sturdy paperback with most of the best selections still inside: "Story of an Hour,' "The Shawl," "The Cask of Amontillado," "A Worn Path," "Soldier's Home." Perhaps my gushing over the selections (entire class would put together the reading list of short stories and we'd connect them to poetry or plays also in the Compact Edition (ex: Alice Munro's "A Found Boat" and e.e. cummings' "in Just spring"). What pleased me most at semester's end were two things: we had REALLY USED the book; after all it was a comp class and not strictly a lit class, and two, students kept their books instead of selling them back because they'd found other selections they liked or they wanted to have a reasonably inexpensive lit anthology for their families.
Now the community college is a full-fledged College, and the Compact Edition is used in all Comp II classes. I was glad to have left that treasure behind me.

Enjoyable learning tool
By Natural Cooker
I used this book in my class in college.

I throughly enjoyed the poems, stories etc. The writing information was clear and easily understood. I disagree with the reviewer blaming the book for the lower grade. I got an A.

I thoroughly enjoyed the previous book
By Patricia S.
I thoroughly enjoyed the previous book, Yes, Mistress, and saw an ad for this one promising to fill in unknown parts of that story and add more depth to characters who had been in the background. Sadly, the entire book consists of scenes that were already aluded to in the previous installment. The already short list length is also exacerbated by the fact that roughly 50% of the content is actually ads and promos for other books, the actual story clocking in around 90 pages. Given the prevailing penis-worship motif this story is infused with, I was unable to even enjoy the steamier scenes. Do not recommend to anyone for any reason.

I love reading anything by NJ Cole
By Kim Hanscom
I love reading anything by NJ Cole, she has this amazing way to bring me into the story I am reading, I do not give a lot of reviews since I read a lot of books but I really felt like this one needed something said about it. When I decide to read a book I look for something to help me escape my reality and take me somewhere that I have not been before with Yes Master I found myself in this world. I do not know much about this life style but man I wanted it, to me that is a great writer. I read this book in one sitting once I started I couldn't put it down, I hope anyone reading will enjoy it as much as I did
