Man, do we need this book!

I don’t know about you but this is one book that I am going to keep by my side for at least the last couple of years. The simple reason for that is that this is the one book I have come across that explains to me in plain and clear language just how this whole on line advertising game works.
What do you know about bidding for your advertising space?
What do you know about targeting the right customers and then closing those customers?
What do you about making money from your on-line ads?
What do you know about paid searches?
If you’re like me I didn’t know much…but now I do and just by reading this excellent new book by Mike Smith who has spent most of his career dealing in Digital Communications brings his years of experience to this book so that the rest of us can benefit from his knowledge.
I cannot say enough about how much this book has helped me to find my way to this completely confusing and I think anyway mine field scary world of digital advertising.
Here are just a couple of examples you’ll learn by reading this book:

The Missing Primer on Digital Advertising Technology

My job recently started focusing more on digital advertising, so I began looking for resources to understand the entire ecosystem, end-to-end. 'Targeted' does a great job of going into exacting detail on complex topics

I'm still in the middle of finishing Targeted but everything I've read so far has been spot on and incredibly detailed. It is hard to find detailed and accurate information about the fast changing and ever complex digital media and advertising technology landscape. 'Targeted' does a great job of going into exacting detail on complex topics, like the adtech lumiscape, and makes sense of all the noise. This is a must read of anyone just entering the programmatic world of advertising. The book is a great survey of the common issues and has really interesting first hand accounts from practitioners.

Heavy symbolism. In fact, the entire book seems comprised of symbolism so if you're looking for a plot this isn't the book for you. Shoots back and forth from Germany 1918 to Germany 1945. Think Ageyev or Kiesbye meets B�ll. Think Hawkes.

Underestimated Genius

John Hawkes is a master of allusion and sordid subtleties. In *The Cannibal*, Hawkes' apocalyptic vision of post-war Germany attacks the reader in the form of an ever-deepening chill. Readers of Gunter Grass's *The Tin Drum* will find an interesting parallel here in Hawkes' sterile world. This man is one of the greatest, most difficult writers of the twentieth century. I also highly recommend *The Lime Twig.*

well-written incoherence

"The Cannibal" is an engaging, flowing novel that is also completely flat (in character and description) and jumpy, with no emotional involvement and even less dialogue (if that's a gesture of defiance toward literary convention, it certainly doesn't work). Is it possible for a book to be completely incoherent and confusing during and after reading, but still keep your finger on the next page? Apparently so, as this is certainly not the worst book I've read. It's unmemorable, sure, but John Hawkes at least exhibits a style that's free of the outright pretension that befalls authors like Pynchon and DeLillo. Interpret it how you may: "The Cannibal" is a book about nothing (maybe incoherence and WWII), but it is well-written, therefore it avoids a one-star rating.

a definitive guide for any business seeking to learn more about email implementation and design

As the managing director of a non-profit that relies heavily on internet use and email, we recently switched our email to Zoho from Outlook. Due to my lack of detailed knowledge in the field, one of my network administrators referred me to this book in order to gain further insight. He wished for us to have a more secure system that handled attachments with higher security and so forth. After reading the material in this guide, my level of understanding has increased exponentially. From common mail server descriptions and email security techniques all the way to enforcing email policies and etiquette, I was impressed with the depth of the material. The writing itself is erudite and the author is an obvious authority on the subject, making it even easier to absorb the information without getting overwhelmed or fatigued. Also, the information on staying on the “whitelist” and not getting blacklisted was worth the purchase alone.

In summation, if you’re looking for a guide that will explain email in a manner that is relevant and actually easy to comprehend, then you can’t do better than this one. I’m sure it will remain in our business library as a reference for a long time to come.

Good Overview of Email, but no technical details of the setup.

This book is not super technical. It will not dive into the exact configuration of any email server system, nor will it provide details in regards to the setup of an email server. It will however, give you a good idea of how email works, different types of mechanism involved and what to consider when setting up an email system. It is more of an overview of "Email Architecture". Overall very informative.

Author Profile
Dr. Anthony Mescher is Professor of Anatomy and Senior Fellow of Institute for Molecular and Cellular Biology. His teaching and research focus is the regenerating amphibian limb, which is able to reproduce itself completely following amputation. Growth and tissue regeneration in this system are dependent on an effect of the nerves, but the nature of the neural factor(s) which stimulate cell proliferation is not known.

Mescher completed a thorough revision of Junquira's Histology Text and Atlas and is the logical choice for the histology review card concept.

Clear, succinct, detailed background for Histology

I purchased the Netter's flash cards 2 months ago and wish I had instead purchased the Lange Basic Histology ones the first time around! Now I have 2 stacks of histo flash cards, only one that I can actually use. Although the Netter's histology flash cards are elegantly designed the content on the back of the flash cards is poor and the information is arranged in a manner that is inaccessible, scattered, and incomplete. Netter's gave only a couple of important basics on the back of each flash card and fill the rest in with minute, irrelevant details without providing an adequate foundation. I spent a lot of money on them, but have not been able to use them at all to study. I had tried, but it never worked out.

Two weeks ago I learned about these Lange Basic Histology flash cards and found them to be almost exactly what I was looking for. The cards are concise and very high yield. Each card has diagrams and/or pictures of micrographs of light microscopy AND electron microscopy which I found very helpful. I found Lange to have more photos (so they capture the real thing) than Netter's, which has tons of illustrations. Moreover, the back of each slide gives an overview of all the basic, important concepts you need to know for that particular topic AND presents clinically relevant information. For me, these slides were designed exactly the way I wanted to design my own study sheets and flashcards: a representative micrograph of light and EM microscopy and/or diagrams on one slide, and all the foundational information (not just 2 concepts + trivial matters) PLUS clinical relevance on the other.

Critiques: a.) These cards have great content, but could be more chic. I personally would have really liked that, but I'm an artist so more critical of that than other people. Netter's is certainly flashier. b.) I wish there were more clinical information. They don't have less than Netter's does on each card, I just wish they had more.

Bottom Line: Lange flash cards summarize the fundamentals of histology I am needing to know for medical school and do so in a clear, compact version. The EM and light microscopy pictures on each are also great, and some have illustrations, too, which are also great. I am finding these flash cards very helpful.

Reviewer "CB" of the Junqueira Basic Histology Flash Cards, of which I am the author, indicates they contain only "maybe 20 pics out of the 500 cards." Actually there are 200 cards, each with one or more images of a different human tissue or cell (with key features indicated) and a concise written description of the relevant histological information. Doody's Book Reviews, an independent, professional reviewing organization that rates educational products for medical and pre-medical students, said of the Junqueira Basic Histology Flash Cards "This is one of the best flashcard products currently available for medical education" and gave the work a weighted score of 100 out of 100.

Lange Basic Histology Cards - Great on Kindle Fire

I am an Anatomy and Physiology student that struggles with histology. Physical flash cards work well. But, I really like he way these cards work on the Kindle Fire. While you are learning the slides, you can hold the page between the cell and the key. Once you learn them, you can challenge yourself. So far I have just tried this on the Kindle Fire Gen 2 the 7" version. It will probably work even better with my Asus Transformer.

Overall, this is a great way to have your flashcards with you all the time. I can just leave the Kindle on my desk and look over at it between tasks to get ready for my lab final. I have a few weeks to study. I'll try to remember to post an update after the exam.

eBook developed by luddites.

The kindle version is trash. It's like some idiot with zero technical experience put together an .azw3 file (eTextbooks should be .azw4) and released it without even glancing at the final product. Words overlap, the formatting is crap on all Kindle applications (PC, Mac, iOS, Fire), tables are awkwardly split onto different pages, PAGES ARE NOT NUMBERED (WTF), homework questions at the end of each chapter are awkwardly split, etc.

eTextbooks SHOULD LOOK IDENTICAL TO THE PRINTED COPY. The eBook copy looks nothing like the printed copy. It's sloppy and loaded with careless errors. On the upside, the DRM license allows you to open it on more than 2 devices.

boring but informative

Required text book, boring but informative, some funny text in some sections. Clear pictures with good information (some answers for questions are under those pictures/graphs). Unfortunatly teacher pointed out that in this book there was biased information about reactions to manufactured hormones given to cattle.

EXCELLENT

Having read both of Sam's other books already, I was really looking forward to his latest. I was NOT disappointed at all! The research is detailed enough to explain neuroscientific processes without leaving us non science majors deep in the weeds. Sam's writing style incorporates humor into the discussion while providing what seems to be (to me) a primer on the evolution of the discoveries and how those were applied in real life to try to improve patients with Neuro issues. Bravo, Mr. Kean. I will be looking forward to more from you. Highly recommended.

The Tale of the Dueling Neurosurgeons: The History of the Human Brain as Revealed by True Stories of Trauma, Madness and Recovery by Sam Kean

"The Tale of the Dueling Neurosurgeons" is an excellent collection of stories in neuroscience. Best-selling author and gifted science writer, Sam Kean, provides readers with a real gem. Kean's great eye for captivating stories about the brain and his expertise in retelling these stories end up helping the readers gain an understanding of how the brain works. This fascinating 377-page book is broken out into the following five parts: Part I. Gross Anatomy; Part II. Cells, Senses; Circuits Part III. Body and Brain; Part IV. Beliefs and Delusions; and Part V. Consciousness.

Positives:
1. Science writing at its best. Kean is climbing the echelon of premier popular science authors.
2. Neuroscience is one of my favorite topics and thrilled that a gifted storyteller handled this book.
3. Great format and approach. Each chapter covers an intriguing story about how the brain works yet it flows beautifully as a whole.
4. Plenty of diagrams of parts of the brain and photos that complement this wonderful narrative.
5. Kean excels at keeping it real. He doesn't oversell what we know and keeps the science well grounded in reality.
6. Wonderful gift of narration that includes a well weaved story based on history and good science.
7. Once again, the impact of religion on science rears its head. "In the early 1200s, the Catholic church had declared that no proper Christians, including physicians, could shed blood; physicians therefore looked down upon surgeons as butchers."
8. Love how theories of neuroscience are introduced some are ultimately debunked and others have staying impact. "These findings led Cajal to propose the "neuron doctrine," one of the most important discoveries ever in neuroscience. In brief, Cajal's neurons were not continuous, but had tiny gaps between them. And they transmitted information in one direction only: from dendrite to cell body to axon."
9. The analysis of famous assassins' brains that lead to interesting discoveries.
10. Sometimes asking the right questions are as important as the answers. "Sorting out cause and effect is tricky with brain chemistry: does depression cause changes in brain chemicals, or do changes in brain chemicals cause depression? The street probably runs both ways. But the balance of evidence does suggest that loneliness, isolation, and a sense of helplessness can all deplete neurotransmitters--can poison the soup and sap vital ingredients."
11. Interesting look at how neurons work. "Overall, just as a wagon wheel will carve a rut into the road after repeated journeys, repeated neuron firings will carve ruts into the brain that make signals much more likely to follow some neural tracks than others."
12. How vision works. "In fact, our vision is so biased toward movement that we don't technically see stationary objects at all. To see something stationary, our brains have to scribble our eyes very subtly over its surface. Experiments have even proved that if you artificially stabilize an image on the retina with a combination of special contact lenses and microelectronics, the image will vanish."
13. A look at how the brain maps the body.
14. An interesting look at a number of interesting diseases involving the brain. "They proposed that kuru, scrapie, and Creutzfeldt-Jakob--which all cause "spongiform" brain damage and can all lie dormant for long periods before roaring awake--were caused by a new class of microbes, which they dubbed `slow viruses.'"
15. Excellent examples of specific damages to the brain and its impact. "But around age ten she began suffering from Urbach-Wiethe disease, a rare disorder that petrifies and kills amygdala cells. Within a few years she had two "black holes" where her amygdalae should have been. She hasn't felt a lick of fear since."
16. Many revelations in this book, here is one of my favorites: "Temporal lobe lesions can flip people's sexual orientations from gay to straight (or vice versa), or redirect their sexual appetites toward inappropriate things: common side effects of Kl�ver-Bucy include zoophilia, coprophilia, pedophilia, and -philias so idiosyncratic they don't have names."
17. A look at what happens when brain processes go awry. "Some delusions run so deep that they fray the very fabric of the victim's universe. With so-called Alice in Wonderland syndrome--a side effect of migraines or seizures--space and time get warped in unsettling ways."
18. The difference between Broca and Wernicke's area. "Generally speaking, a broken Broca's area knocks out speech production, while a wrecked Wernicke's area impairs speech comprehension."
19. By far the best retelling of the over told story of Phineas Gage (it's practically in every book of popular neuroscience). He debunks some myths pertaining to this story, which I found to be quite refreshing.
20. Works cited and so much more...

Negatives:
1. Very little not to like about this book. I would have added a timeline or a table of the greatest contributors of neuroscience as a nice additional bonus.
2. Kean stays away from controversial issues. There is very little on intelligence and as I recall nothing on gender differences. He touches upon social justice with regards to crime and punishment but I sense he holds back.
3. I loved the retelling of Phineas Gage's story but I felt Kean could have done better with the topic of consciousness.

In summary, what a fun way to learn about how the brain works; this is a beautifully written and well-researched book that is a joy to read. Fascinating stories about ordinary people who went through extraordinary circumstances and Kean retells their stories with mastery. A high recommendation! Get this book.

Really the history of the study of the brain, the two neurosurgeons of the title appear relatively briefly at the beginning of the book. This is only right, because they were the first neurosurgeons and lived well over 150 years ago. A lot has happened since then, and this book covers every key moment of it, mostly in terms a non-scientist can understand, and with considerable good humor. There's a lot of good historical background, and the stories of many truly bizzare brain ailments, accidents involving the brain, and just plain oddities. Cases of truly odd behavior are covered in excruciating detail. When you finish this book, you will feel, well, brainier.

Carmen Aboy Valldejuli, n�e Aboy Ferrer, was a member of one of Puerto Rico's most distinguished families. Her relatives included actor-director Jos� Ferrer and Monsita Ferrer, who was a well-known pianist and composer. Brought up in the old Spanish tradition, Mrs. Valldejuli did not have the opportunity to discover the joy of cooking in one's own kitchen until she met and married a gourmet, the late Luis F. Valldejuli.
Curious about Puerto Rico's native cuisine, the Valldejulis researched and collected recipes together. Their efforts produced two other cookbooks available from Pelican, Cocina Criolla and Juntos en la Cocina.

About the Author
Carmen Aboy Valldejuli expressed her hopes that, eventually, all readers may wend their way to Puerto Rico to sample these delicacies in the land of their origin. But, she was certain that the recipes in Puerto Rican Cookery would bring the flavor of the islands to your own table. Pelican also publishes the Spanish version of this book, Cocina Criolla, as well as the Spanish cookbook classic Juntos en la Cocina, written by Valldejuli and her husband, Luis F. Valldejuli. Valldejuli passed away in 2005.

Translation of The Definitive Puerto Rican Cookbook!

I'm Puerto Rican-American. My Puerto Rican parents raised me in New Jersey on traditional Puerto Rican food: arroz con pollo (rice with chicken cooked inside), pastales (Puerto Rican tamales), relleno de papas (meat-filled potato dumplings), alcapurias (meat-filled hot-dog shaped fritters), pernil (pork roasted in the oven, as opposed to "lechon" which is pork roasted over fire), arroz con gandules (rice with beans -- one of several kinds of delicious beans), tostones y yuevos (fried plantan -- sweet soft yellow or salty firm -- with eggs), mofongo (a garlic-filled tostones ball mashed into a ball of delectable flavor), etc. Like a reader who posted here previously, I felt sad (and happy) when I first ate a dish prepared by an Asian woman (a wonderful home chef) who followed the recipes in Puerto Rican Cookery, a translation of Cocina Criolla, the most popular and traditional cookbook in Puerto Rico. When I visited my parents, who retired in Puerto Rico two weeks ago (Thanksgiving 2003), we were pleased to see both Puerto Rican Cookery and it's original Cocina Criolla selling all over the island: all bookstores, tourists shops, the great fortresses of the island -- San Cristobal and El Morro, etc. Simply put, this book is 'THE DEFINITIVE PUERTO RICAN COOKBOOK -- acknowledged as the preeminent guide to Puerto Rican cuisine in Puerto Rico itself. There are other good books sold in Puerto Rico, but even in Puerto Rico, Puerto Rican Cookery (Cocina Criolla) is the unquestioned number one. The Asian woman used it to make several dishes, and although I would not admit this to my mother, she out-Puerto Ricaned my mother at the kitchen stove. Buy this wonderful book with "tus ojos cerrados" ("with your eyes closed"). That's a Puerto Rican/Spanish idiom meaning that even a blind man or woman wouldn't go wrong in selecting this wonderful book. It was written by a Puerto Rican matriarch of a great Puerto Rican family, who was banished from the kitchen by her aristocratic Puerto Rican family. (She is a relative of the 1950 oscar-winning Puerto Rican actor, Jose Ferrer -- who won for his English-accented CIRENO DE BERGEAC) Her revenge, marry a man who loved to cook and embark on a life-long pursuit of anthologizing the island's best traditional dishes. The book is 10000% traditional. "Te lo prometo!" (I promise you!) If you buy one Puerto Rican cookbook, buy the original Spanish "Cocina Criolla" or this 10000% faithful translation, Puerto-Rican Cookery. The instructions are step-by-step. You'll learn many recipes for Puerto-Rico's secret spice -- sofrito! :)

All you'll ever need to cook perfect Puerto Rican dishes

Carmen Aboy recopilates the best and most traditional recipes ever found in Puerto Rican kitchens. This book's been around for quite some time, with minor alterations in each yearly edition. Recipes are extremely simple and easy to follow, plus the ingredients are accesible in both, the latin and the US market. Besides, Carmen added a few tips for better cooking and for the table setting. This is a complete cookbook, with a great variety of dishes. I use it almost on a daily basis, and it has becomed a heirloom in my family. Your kitchen will improve to 5-star-restaurant levels!!!!!! Buen provecho!

Comprehensive collection of Puerto Rican recipes in one book

As a child I remember the many smells from my mother's kitchen as she made another simple but tasty dish. Arroz con gandules, frittas, bistec, and many more. Now, working overseas, I was constantly calling my mother to ask her how she made certain dishes so that I can cook them for my family so they too can experience Puerto Rican foods. Until recently I had never found a cook book that had any reasonable number of recipes from Puerto Rico. All there was were the typical Carribean cookbooks that may have one or two recipes credited to my home island. Recently I stumbled upon "Puerto Rican Cookery" by Carmen Aboy Valldejuli, and it has been one of the greatest finds for me. Every dish that I can remember is in this book. The recipes are very detailed from ingredients to procedures. I have compared some of the recipes to the ones that I received from mom and they are very similar, proving their authenticity. I always look forward to trying a new recipe because I know that as long as I follow Mrs. Valldejuli's instructions my family is in for a great meal, just like abuelita's (grandma's). My wife, a working mom, appreciates it also as it means she doesn't have to cook because dad has taken over the kitchen now. With "Puerto Rican Cookery" anyone can be confident that the results will be culinary taste treats that they will want to experience over and over again
