Review

"Especially useful for the serious, but Greekless, reader of Aristotle, this new translation in the excellent 'Clarendon Aristotle Series' will be a useful addition even to those libraries that already have the translations of...[Joachim and Loeb]. Not only does Williams take into account recent scholarly work on the text, but also (in helpful notes and an introduction) he makes this complex work more accessible to the modern reader interested in mainstream conceptual problems about being something."--Choice

Pleasant translation, but notes too scholarly for beginners
By Jordan Bell
Aristotle's De Generatione et Corruptione (GC) distinguishes various ways we talk about natural things changing. The work begins: “Our task now is to pick out the causes and definitions of generation and corruption common to all those things which come to be and perish in the course of nature; and secondly to investigate growth and alteration, asking what each of them is, and whether we are to suppose that the nature of alteration and generation is the same or different, as they are certainly distinguished in name.”

Aside from this translation, GC has been translated into English by E. S. Forster for Loeb Aristotle: On Sophistical Refutations. On Coming-to-be and Passing Away. On the Cosmos. (Loeb Classical Library No. 400) and H. H. Joachim for the Oxford Complete Works of Aristotle.

Aristotle assigns technical senses to various everyday words like "change" or "elements", but Aristotle sharpens existing meanings for these words rather than defining the terms from already defined or primitive words. And of course Aristotle is sharpening the meaning of Greek words not English words, say "metaballein" not "change". I think what would be most useful to help the English speaker understand GC is a long commentary on the technical terms Aristotle uses, both how they are used by Aristotle in his other writings and how they are used in Greek writings of Aristotle's time. Words and phrases like "compound", "elements", "indivisible", "source of movement", "principle", "prior in nature", "change in their affections”, "substance", "body", “opposing properties”, “no point is contiguous to another point”, “when it takes place in the affections, accidentally, it will be alteration”, "privation", “A quantity, understood universally, does not come into existence”.

I am a beginner to Aristotle's works, and Williams' extensive notes were not helpful to me. They talk about Aristotle's arguments, rather than explain what Aristotle is saying. There are many ancient and medieval commentaries on GC, but few of these have been translated into English. The Commentary of Philoponus has been translated in the Ancient Commentators on Aristotle series in several parts, the first two by Williams Philoponus: On Aristotle On Coming-to-Be and Perishing 1.1-5 (Ancient Commentators on Aristotle). The Commentary of Averroes was translated by Samuel Kurland in 1958 as publication 58 of the Medieval Academy of America. And the Commentary of Thomas Aquinas is easily available online in English translation.
