The Horizontal Man: A Library of America eBook Classic, by Helen Eustis

Helen Eustis’s The Horizontal Man (1946) won an Edgar Award for best first novel and continues to fascinate as a singular mixture of detection, satire, and psychological portraiture. A poet on the faculty of an Ivy League school is found murdered, setting off ripple effects of anxiety, suspicion, and panic in the hot house atmosphere of an English department rife with talk of Freud and Kafka. This classic novel is one of eight works included in The Library of America's two-volume edition Women Crime Writers: Eight Suspense Novels of the 1940s & 50s, edited by Sarah Weinman.

Why didn't she write more
By Kevin Brianton
Apart from who killed Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie, this whodunnit has the best trick on a reader I have ever read. Strangely out of print, the book shows the enormous potential that Helen Eustis had as a writer. I wish she had written more of these enjoyable novels.

Engrossing for 99% of the way
By Ron
PLOT: When a young teacher at a college for women is brutally slain, a student becomes the focus of the investigation. Her confession seems to clinch the deal. But another student teams up with a reporter when she feels the accused student (who seems to be having a nervous breakdown) didn't kill anyone. Suspects aren't too many in a small group of academics, each with an attache case full of idiosyncrasies and secrets.

REVIEW: Certainly an easy book to read, with some well-thought out characters, the story zips along from the murder on page 2. Back when this was written the twist was probably more of a surprise, so I felt a little let down at the very end. Plus I thought a few threads begun in the last chapters were left hanging. Not a masterpiece, but still enjoyable.

"The Horizontal Man" in the Library of America
By Robin Friedman
The Library of America has released a two-volume set "Women Crime Writers" (2015) consisting of eight crime novels written by women in the 1940s and 1950s. It is absorbing to work through this collection which is edited by Sarah Weinman, a scholar of women's crime fiction. Helen Eustis' novel, "The Horizontal Man" (1946) is the second book in the collection and the LOA has released it separately as an e-book. Eustis' novel won the Edgar Award for the best first crime novel but has received little subsequent attention.

The novel is set in an Ivy League women's college in the 1940s. The plot revolves around the brutal murder of a young professor of English, Kevin Boyle who had been attractive to many women. The novel presents a small group of characters and suspects, including Molly Morrisson, a young, impressionable student, two colleagues of Boyle, Marks, and Hungerford, a middle-aged woman who exudes sexuality, Mrs. Cramm. Eustis develops each of her characters well. They are interesting for themselves and for their satirical portrayal of university life as well as for their possible role in the murder. Other characters in the novel include the college president who is anxious to avoid unfavorable publicity for the school, a reporter clumsily investigating the murder, and a psychiatrist Dr. Forstmann.

The book's wry observations about love, college life, and literature are at least as important as the solving of the murder. The book has a heavily psychological, Freudian cast evidenced in the portrayal of Forstmann. This mid-20th century novel shows and accepts social and sexual mores different in many respects from those of today. It is valuable to be reminded of changing perspectives to avoid taking one's own point of view as absolute. At one key point of the novel. Forstmann adopts the words of one of the characters and suggests that life can be viewed as exhibiting a "poetry of unreason". Forstmann explains:

"Because psychiatrists aren't intended to be poets, they're scientists, they're obliged professionally to take the dew off the rose and analyze it as H2O. That's their function. But when, on my busman's holidays, I've thought of madness, it seems more easily explained to me as poetry in action. A life of symbol rather than reality. On paper one can understand Gulliver, or Kafka, or Dante. But let a man go about behaving as if he were a giant or a midget, or caught in a cosmic plot directed at himself, or in heaven or hell, and we feel horror -- we want to disavow him, to proclaim his as far as possible removed from ourselves."

The late Helen Eustis (1916 -- January 11, 2015) attended Smith College and did graduate work at Columbia. She wrote several novels and stories in addition to "The Horizontal Man", including a Civil War novel, "The Fool Killer" which in 1965 was made into a film starring Anthony Perkins. In her latter years, Eustis translated several important books from French including "When I was Old" by Georges Simeon.

I was glad to get to know this fine, little-known novel and to learn something about its author. The LOA and Sarah Wineman deserve kudos for preserving the work of women crime writers, including Helen Eustis, as part of America's literature.

The Large Hadron Collider: Unraveling the Mysteries of the Universe (Astronomers' Universe), by Martin Beech

It may at first seem that the world of subatomic physics is far removed from our every day lives. Isn’t it all just a waste of time and taxpayers' money? Hopefully, all who read this book will come to a different conclusion. Collider physics is all about our origins, and this aspect alone makes it worthy of our very best attention. The experiments conducted within the vast collider chambers are at the forefront of humanity’s quest to unweave the great tapestry that is the universe. Everything is connected. Within the macrocosm is the microcosm. By knowing how matter is structured, how atoms and elementary particles interact, and what forces control the interactions between the particles, we discover further clues as to why the universe is the way it is, and we uncover glimpses of how everything came into being.

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), in the process of coming online at CERN, is the world’s largest and most complex machine. It represents the pinnacle of human ingenuity, and its physical characteristics, costs, and workings astound us at every turn. We are literally humbled by the machine that has been produced through a grand international collaboration of scientists. This book is about what those scientists hope to discover with the LHC, for hopes do run high, and there is much at stake. Careers, reputations and prestigious science prizes will be realized, and possibly lost, in the wake of the results that the LHC will produce. And there are risks, real and imagined. The LHC will probe the very fabric of matter and it will help us understand the very weft and the weave of the universe.

Review

From the reviews:

“Beech (Univ. of Regina, Canada) has written this work for general readers who are interested in the construction and purpose of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). … it provides a very good description of the physics that the LHC hopes to explore. One can consider the work an examination of modern particle physics and cosmology that uses the LHC as a unifier. … Summing Up: Recommended. General readers and lower-division undergraduates.” (E. Kincanon, Choice, Vol. 48 (5), January, 2011)

From the Back Cover
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the largest engineering project ever undertaken, and one of the most expensive. Why are physicists around the world so excited about it? What secrets of the universe does this gargantuan piece of machinery hope to reveal? What risks are there in operating it? Could the exotic particles that are produced in the collisions―including tiny black holes that should wink into and out of existence― between subatomic particles be a threat not only to humankind but to the planet itself? In this thorough and engaging review of cutting-edge physics and cosmology, you will learn why the collider was built and how it works. You will find out what scientists are hoping to find out and what current aspects of the Standard Model might need to be revised. You will even learn about the quest to identify so-called dark matter and dark energy, which many now feel make up most of what's out there. This is a wild ride into some very unfamiliar and strange territory, but it is well worth your time to explore, as the Large Hadron Collider is set to change some very fundamental ideas of our universe, from the smallest pieces that make it up to the grandest.

About the Author
Dr. Martin Beech is a full professor of astronomy at Campion College at The University of Regina in Saskatchewan, Canada. He has published many scientific research papers on stellar structure and evolution and several books on astronomy. Asteroid 12343 has been named in recognition of his research on meteors and meteorites. This is Beech's third book for Springer. He has already published Rejuvenating the Sun and Avoiding Other Global Catastrophes (2008) and Terraforming: The Creating of Habitable Worlds (2009).

Good summary but many typos
By Mystery Lover
The book brings together several topics in cosmology and particle physics, with a good summary of each topic. It makes the relation of the various areas much clearer in my mind. These are related to how possible discoveries at the LHC may shed light on some problems.

My main complaint is the number of typographical errors - it looks as if it was edited by someone with little understanding of the contents. The worst example is that 'mediated by' (as in 'the force is mediated by') is replaced everywhere with 'mitigated by'.

In spite of the typos, it is a worthwhile book.

Great book

Excellent book, filled with great information on the building and use of the LHC. Though it was written before the discovery of the Higgs Boson it is still a worthwhile read.

Cultural Heritage, Ethics, and the Military (Heritage Matters)From Boydell Press

The world reacted with horror to the images of the looting of the National Museum in Iraq in 2003 - closely followed by other museums and then, largely unchecked, or archaeological sites across the country. This outcome had been predicted by many archaeologists, with some offering to work directly with the military to identify museums and sites to be avoided and protected. However, this work has since been heavily criticised by others working in the field, who claim that such collaboration lended a legitimacy to the invasion. It has therefore served to focus on the broader issue of whether archaeologists and other cultural heritage experts should ever work with the military, and, if so, under what guidelines and strictures. The essays in this book, drawn from a series of international conferences and seminars on the debate, provide an historical background to the ethical issues facing cultural heritage experts, and place them in a wider context. How do medical and religious experts justify their close working relationships with the military? Is all contact with those engaged in conflict wrong? Does working with the military really constitute tacit agreement with military and political goals, or can it be seen as contributing to the winning of a peace rather than success in war? Are guidelines required to help define roles and responsibilities? And can conflict situations be seen as simply an extension of protecting cultural property on military training bases? The book opens and addresses these and other questions as matters of crucial debate. Contributors: Peter Stone, Margaret M. When you think of a cane, do you think of an elderly person walking down the street, using the "stick" as a crutch? When author Octavio Ramos Jr. sees a cane, he sees a hard-hitting self-defense weapon with a crook and horn capable of incapacitating any opponent within a matter of seconds. This book teaches the art of one of the most unexpected self-defense tools ever created. Carried anywhere--into almost any situation--the cane rarely attracts undue attention...until you need it to.

From the Publisher
Here's what Master Ron Geoffrion, 6th dan (President and Chairman of the World Tae Kwon Do Association, New Mexico Schools) says of Raising Cane: "An unfortunate aspect of our society is that the criminal element most often attacks individuals that are perceived as weak (i.e., women, children, the aged, and the disabled). The techniques explained in this book by Mr. Ramos would not only be effective but, in some cases, devastating and deadly. An elderly person or someone who is resigned to carrying a cane for a physical impairment could take this book, practice the exercises Mr. Ramos suggests, train and condition as specified in Section 5, and become quite capable of defending themselves from assault."

About the Author
Octavio Ramos Jr. served as a Deputy Sheriff for Los Alamos County for five years and was a member of the New Mexico Mounted Patrol, a statewide law-enforcement agency, for more than ten years, during which he was certified in a number of weapons, including pepper spray and the ASP baton, and qualified with firearms every year. His martial arts experience includes Filipino Kali (stick and knife fighting) and Goju-Shorei Karate weapons (cane and knife).

Worthy despite shortcomings
By L. M. Jordan
"Raising Cane" documents the pedestrian and much underestimated art of cane defense. What could be more familiar than a crook-necked cane, or as accessible as 36" of hardwood resting at the ready in your dominant hand? Neither a knife nor gun has this advantage and the cane can be taken almost everywhere by old or young.

Topics covered: Basic terminology, stances, footwork, power strikes, flexibility (redondo) strikes, thrusts, blocks, use of the crook, use of the live(free) hand, fighting scenarios, combinations and flows, disarms, conditioning/weight room work and a section on cane vs. knife. This is an ambitious undertaking in just 176 pages.

My first hours with this text were frustrated by the sometimes confusing illustrations employed to convey technique. I'm not sure if I'm doing the beginning strike series (Cinco Tiros) correctly. No doubt it is a challenging task to portray the dynamics of any martial art with static illustrations. And the style chosen--stick figure drawings viewed from a single vantage point--leave much to be desired. (Many example would benefit from a 2nd point of view.) I simply could not decode some of the drawings, e.g. strong-side high-level strike (p48) and weak-side corkscrew thrust (p50). Both seem impossible as illustrated. In many illustrations there are missing critical frames showing the path the cane should take and the proper orientation of the thumb, thus leaving the reader to guess, fill-in or draw upon previous experience. Some drawings are mislabled (p117) and do not coordinate with text--poor proofing.

RC desparately cries out for a companion demonstration DVD. All is not lost, the author does direct the reader to the Canemasters website where one can find instructional DVDs, which are not inexpensive, as well as a selection of robust canes which put to shame anything else I've been able to find.

A valiant effort but unnecessarily difficult to decode (4.0 stars).

Nice Introduction
By Grant Fritchey
I was interested in finding some techniques to use with a walking stick when I stumbled on several variations of cane fighting. After some research, I went with this book. I'm not at all disappointed. It very directly and clearly lays down a foundation for using a cane as a fighting weapon. It covers all the basics quite well. The illustrations and directions are informative enough for most of the techniques in the book. I've shown it to my instructors and they were impressed with the material as well. The one shortcoming I found was that the stick figures used to illustrate the techniques couldn't always clearly show what was happening to the cane in the hand. Still, overall a wonderful read providing some great information.

Not what I had hoped for.
By The Old Dog
I really don't know whether this book is a good effort or not. It is written for one more experienced and capable that I in the martial arts.

I am 74 but I am not interested in being anyone's victim. I had hoped that I would be able to glean enough useful information to make more feasible the use of my cane as a defensive weapon. Alas, I had already learned on my own the few things that might have been useful to me in this book - and more.

As every senior citizen knows, old folk are especially attractive targets for muggers, especially if we look like we might have something worth taking in our pockets. If one lives in a location where it is not possible to carry a firearm (which is the better option and every senior who can should get a carry permit) then the cane is the next best defensive tool. I managed to successfully repel muggers in the train station in Prague six years ago and again in Chicago two years ago using my cane. But I am no expert. I would like to see a manual written for the senior. I am sure the author of this book has the knowledge, but he assumes too much. His market is with older people, not the perfectly conditioned, trained, dojo crowd. Perhaps he will write another book. And as a final comment. I didn't particularly like the stick figure illustrations.

Stasi: The Untold Story Of The East German Secret Police, by John O Koehler

In this gripping narrative, John Koehler details the widespread activities of East Germany’s Ministry for State Security, or “Stasi.” The Stasi, which infiltrated every walk of East German life, suppressed political opposition, and caused the imprisonment of hundreds of thousands of citizens, proved to be one of the most powerful secret police and espionage services in the world. Koehler methodically reviews the Stasi’s activities within East Germany and overseas, including its programs for internal repression, international espionage, terrorism and terrorist training, art theft, and special operations in Latin America and Africa.Koehler was both Berlin bureau chief of the Associated Press during the height of the Cold War and a U.S. Army Intelligence officer. His insider’s account is based on primary sources, such as U.S. intelligence files, Stasi documents made available only to the author, and extensive interviews with victims of political oppression, former Stasi officers, and West German government officials. Drawing from these sources, Koehler recounts tales that rival the most outlandish Hollywood spy thriller and, at the same time, offers the definitive contribution to our understanding of this still largely unwritten aspect of the history of the Cold War and modern Germany.

Amazon.com Review
As human rights activist Rainer Hildebrandt observed in 1948, communist East Germany resembled nothing so much as a vast "concentration camp in which only the warders and those who hand out the food can still live well." Those warders were known collectively as the Ministerium fr Statessicherheit, or Stasi. As John Koehler suggests in the impressively detailed Stasi: The Untold Story of the East German Secret Police, their history is the history of totalitarian East Germany. Including informants, the Stasi at one point would number one operative for every 66 East German citizens; so ruthless and efficient were they in their efforts to squelch dissent that even the KGB found itself occasionally appalled by the Stasi's methods.

Right up to its 1990 demise, the Stasi cast a huge net of spies and agents around Europe and the rest of the world, enlisting as many as 30,000 West Germans as secret operatives, and involving more than a few American intelligence personnel in traitorous dalliances that would badly damage NATO defense capabilities during the Cold War. Koehler, a longtime foreign correspondent with Associated Press and onetime aide to president Ronald Reagan, based much of his research on the vast archive of secret Stasi documents discovered after the fall of the Berlin Wall and subsequent unification of Germany. Although this book is only the tip of the iceberg, he has provided a fascinating look into the inner workings of one of the most dangerous, but least known, organizations of the 20th century. --Tjames Madison

(After the collapse of the Berlin Wall and unification of Germany, journalist Timothy Garton Ash gained access to his Stasi file and began interviewing the people who contributed to it. The results of his investigation are found in the compelling The File.)

From Publishers Weekly
A former U.S. Army intelligence officer and an AP correspondent for 28 years (including a stint as Berlin bureau chief), Koehler does much to illuminate the workings of the Stasi, the much feared East German secret police. To illustrate the Stasi's formidable reach, he cites some astounding numbers provided by famed Nazi hunter Simon Weisenthal: while Hitler's Gestapo policed 80 million Germans with a force of 40,000, the Stasi kept 17 million people in line with 102,000 officials, a number that doesn't even include the legion of casual informers that made the notion of privacy in East Germany something of a cruel joke. Following a swaggering yet hair-raising account of his own meeting with Stasi chief Erich Mielke in 1965, Koehler delves into many incidents that show how the Stasi frequently operated beyond the borders of East Germany and, with connections to the KGB, conducted espionage operations against the West and colluded with terrorist organizations. Reading in part like an insider's jargon-filled report, this thorough and engrossing work is replete with such heavy-handed Communist spy tactics as sexual blackmail, but it also contains fresh tidbits?such as the case of the "Delicatessen Spy," who hid espionage paraphernalia beneath her dead son's ashes in a cremation urn. From Library Journal
An AP Berlin bureau chief and a U.S. Army Intelligence officer, Koehler offers a study spanning the history of the GDR, a time in which Stasi brutality sustained an illegitimate Communist regime. Interviews and documentary evidence reveal a violent war against internal "enemies," a "hugely successful" infiltration of most West German institutions, and collaboration with international terrorists. Koehler is at his best depicting such personalities as Stasi chief Erich Mielke, Col. Rainer Wiegand, and the infamous Gunter Guillaume, whose exposure brought down the government of Chancellor Willy Brandt. The Stasi's often uneasy relations with the Soviet KGB and the claim that the "most" Stasi recruits in West Germany were Social Democrats are surprising. While the absence of broader political and theoretical considerations linked to the regime may narrow the book's importance, it is the most complete work available in English. This is the book on the Stasi I had been waiting for
By A Customer
Mr. Koehler provides a vivid picture of what made the DDR tick. He has deftly chronicled the intimate details of his interviews with former Stasi apparatchiks and victims of the Strasi's surveillance and intimidation. Koehler interprets the lurid details of East Germany's most sensitive government files which the Stasi never dreamed would be seen by western eyes.
It is clear from Koehler's book that much of the eastern bloc's demise, in particular the DDR's, was due to the enormous drain of hard currency assets and manpower required to support an intensive domestic and foreign intelligence network. Koehler also chronicles the obsessive "fraternal support" of Nicaragua by East German leader Erich Honecker during the 1980s which further drained the limited resources of the DDR.
It is fair to ask why it took Koehler nearly 10 years since the collapse of East Germany to complete his book. The Stasi documents which are the source for Koehler's research have been opened up in recent years to a limited number of journalists. In many cases, Koehler has an insiders account based on his exclusive access to recently released Stasi files. Koehler brings the best evidence yet of the Stasi's repression as he presents the facts of what it was like to have lived in the DDR more vividly than I have seen written anywhere else.
As a traveler to East Germany during the Cold War years and the months leading up to reunification, I would have enjoyed an additional chapter detailing the Stasi's surveillance of western visitors to the former DDR. I found this book to be the intensive study of the East German secret police that I had been waiting for.

This is the one book on the STASI you must have!
By A Customer
The East German security and intelligence service is known to the world as the MfS, or STASI. Since the collapse of the Berlin Wall, Western historians and scholars have bemoaned the lack of books, in English, on the subject. The delays in publishing have not been for lack of interest, but rather a lack of knowledgeable authors. John Koehler's, "STASI", is the missing book and provides an outstanding contribution to the history of espionage, the Cold War, and the German people.
For more than eight years Koehler conducted detailed interviews with the original participants; a feat unheard of ten years ago. The result is an unparalleled "insider's look" at the scope of STASI intelligence and security operations. Koehler's background as a reporter and intelligence professional provide him with both an understanding of espionage and the ability to tell a compelling and interesting story.
The STASI operated as the "little brother" to the much larger Soviet "Committee for State Security", or KGB. It earned the KGB's complete respect through the total repression of the East German people at home, and the skilled intelligence operations of the HVA (the Main Administration of Foreign Intelligence) outside it's borders.
New details are presented about the pervasive infiltration of HVA operatives into West Germany's government, military, and industrial complex. The revelations of these infiltration's are so sensitive they still destabilized German politics after a decade. Other details reveal operations targeted against US forces and NATO including: the first penetration of U.S. Army intelligence by an East German spy as well as an expose of Americans selling our most sensitive defense secrets to the communists. Where some intelligence writers approach their topic with limited details and knowledge, Koehler involves the reader with a mastery of intelligence "tradecraft" that would make Tom Clancy jealous. Why read fictional accounts of espionage when the "inside" events of the Cold War are infinitely more intricate and fascinating? Spy fiction novelists will be using Koehler's book as a source for story plots and technical details for years to come. No single book can ever tell the complete history of espionage in the Cold War. Koehler's "STASI" does a through job of defining one piece of the giant jig-saw puzzle on Cold War spy history. Combine it with David Murphy's "Battleground Berlin; CIA vs. KGB in the Cold War" (Yale University Press, 1997) to provide another piece of the puzzle that looks at the "frontlines" of the Cold War in Berlin from the perspective of the other two major players in the area, the CIA and KGB.

Stasi by John Koehler brings contrasts to life
By A Customer
Stasi is an excellent study in constrasts and merits the attention of anyone interested in current affairs, terrorist studies, European history, political science and intelligence history. Since the author has met many of the people discussed in the book, it is a text loaded with anecdotes and details that many biographers or historians never get to probe. The author shares these singular observations with his readers.
The dark side is sad indeed. Koehler begins by exposing the feudal world of East German leftist radicals and how the Stasi organization emerged from thier international machinations. Erich Mielke, who became the Minister for State Security, built the Stasi into an unbelievable machine that promoted evil. In order to do this he became a feudal serf of the KGB, and a king in East Germany. Ultimately, he became a pill-popping addict despite his successful, shameful reign of terror. Under his tutelage, Stasi officers, most of whom had the barest rudimentary education, spied on their neighbors, bugged confessionals, and tortured countless German citizens. One citizen, Josef Kneifel, described his life under Mielke's world of concrete control as similar to that of a "dazed animal" while the "vassals of Moscow" worked overtime to destroy the lives, marriages, and occupations of numerous frightened East Germans.
Koehler contrasts the absolute despair of living under the Stasi against the dedication and committment of freedom-loving people to bring an end to the Stasi kingdom of cruely, ruthless power- mongering and paranoia. The agencies and individuals who sacrificed much to bring freedom and civility to life in the Stasi empire were understaffed and risked many dangers. Traitors from within their own ranks motivated only by money or the need to feel superior to others sold them out time and again. Koehler faithfully catalogues the close calls, successes and failures of these brave people. Undaunted, they continued to pursue their goal of freedom for those in communist countries with the help of average people such as lathe operators, secretaries, pastors, and railroad dispatchers. Erich Mielke believed that Poland's working classes could never upend the communist regime in Poland. Ultimately, as Koehler shows, the Stasi chief underestimated them.
This book also touched on virtual terrorism's birth. Both IBM and Texas Instruments unknowlingly employed Stasi spies who gathered information about computers and communications apparatus. Another group had developed a unique particle spray, similar to a chemical weapon, to spread over enemy communication stations and disrupt correspondence in case of war.
Finally, Koehler warns readers that former Stasi officers, well-trained in terrorist techniques, are unemployed and looking for work today. They also continue to maintain connections to the Russian mafia which operates in a land full of uncharted and unclaimed fissile material. Mielke's men still lurk in the underworld, unwilling and unable to function in civil society again.
I love books by journalists because they are packed with information. Koehler does a masterful job of keeping the numerous personalities and their activities from becoming a jumbled morass of confusing paragraphs. The book is structured well and easy to read. The excellent topic, clear prose, detailed insights and good organization make this book very much worth buying and reading.
