One hundred years ago, common belief held that science began with the Renaissance. Researchers have discovered, however, that navigation, architecture, medicine, and astronomy and other fields were all essential to life in the Middle Ages and were also viable fields of scholarly endeavor. Many of these areas developed independently in isolated parts of the world. Sharing of information came with increased trade.

This volume is the eleventh in the Routledge Encyclopedias of the Middle Ages series (formerly known as Garland Encyclopedias) and follows in the tradition of focusing on one geographical area or theme. It uses six broad categories to define its coverage: "Apparatus, Equipment, Implements, Techniques"; "Biography"; "Disciplines"; "Geographical Places"; "Institutions"; and "Scientific Genres." At the beginning of the volume, there is an alphabetical list of entries as well as a listing arranged by the six themes. The biographical articles that comprise the largest category reflect a scope that encompasses Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Africa and includes religious and political as well as scientific individuals. Some examples are Peter Abelard, Roger Bacon, Ibn Rushd (Averroes), Maimonides, and William of Ockham.

Overall, this is a well-crafted reference source. The articles themselves are clearly written, signed, and well documented with bibliographies. The black-and-white illustrations are appropriate and enhance the text. Compared to Scribner's Dictionary of the Middle Ages (DMA) (1982-1989), specific articles are less complex in Routledge and have a more straightforward style. As an example, while the DMA has one 18-page article on mathematics, the Routledge has articles on Algebra and Arithmetic, each no longer than two pages. Although the DMA will likely be considered the benchmark, Routledge is clearly geared toward a somewhat less--scholarly audience whose goals require shorter answers. Another True Glimpse at Victorian Times

In "The Nether World," Gissing gives you another one of his hard, realistic looks at life in London in Victorian times. This time he focuses on the poorest of the poor in the Clerkenwell area of London. These are people whom England's infantile labor laws generally can't help. If/When they can find work, they often work 16 hours per day all week, and the wages they earn hardly cover rent for a very small room in disreputable housing. It's a world where unwanted children multiply like rabbits, and the death of any family member is usually seen as a relief of one less mouth to feed.
For all these reasons, this world - this nether world - is a world about which the upper and middle classes are happily ignorant. Those born into these lowest levels of humanity often rail about the injustice of being born into such circumstances. However, their cries for social reform, their desperate attempts to better themselves, and their pitiful needs for simple pennies are never really heard or understood by those more comfortably off.
Within this novel, then, Gissing explores the lives of a range of characters as they deal with being born in the nether world. While he focuses on the heart-warming characters of Jane Snowdon and Sidney Kirkwood, Gissing competently develops the storyline of a large number of other Clerkenwell characters whose lives intertwine with Jane's and Sidney's. In his distinct manner, Gissing is mercilessly honest and yet generally compassionate with the characters whose lives he examines. Thus, he offers a glimpse of the slums - full of love, ambition, corruption, greed, and despair - in a manner that many of us would never know otherwise.
Many compare or try to compare this kind of honest look at the rougher side of London with Dickens. However, it is important to note that Dickens tended to idealize poverty and always brought things to a hopeful, positive ending. Gissing does no such thing. Though an educated man, Gissing himself suffered cruelly from poverty and mixed with these classes as he struggled to support himself as an author (see "New Grub Street"). Thus, he has no idealist views of poverty and simplistic lives.
Additionally, Gissing has a penchant for realistic storylines. It is unnerving to read his books, actually, because you can't rest on the fact that he will work everything out nicely in the end. In fact, he usually doesn't. He is courageous enough to write true-to-life outcomes to very frustrating, dispiriting circumstances. It is probably why he never became a popular author as readers often want happy endings - with a Ghost of Christmas Past if necessary - in order to relieve their consciences.
All in all, another great work by Gissing. He does get a bit preachy (even as he reveals the preachiness of others as futile), but that is easily overlooked. The accurate historical glimpse of London that he gives is invaluable. And I imagine that his brutally honest portrayal of life might speak to the impoverished among us today

Don't buy this edition

I'm not commenting on the novel itself here (although it is an interesting, if problematic, look at London's underworld), but I do want to warn readers against buying this Echo Library edition. There is no contextual material (no intro, afterword, or notes), which would have been useful, but more annoying is the fact that the copy editor for this press appears to have been asleep while editing this edition. There are three or four major typos on every page (glaring typos-- periods in the middle of words, apostrophes instead of commas, mispelled words). Sometimes there are even words missing, which makes the prose difficult to follow. This novel is worth reading, but try to find a different edition.

A noble heart sheltered by ignorance

Gissing's novel about working class life, bleak and angry, published in 1889, shares a main plot element with Dickens' Great Expectations: an expected inheritance, here from a returner from down-under. There was a trend in Victorian fiction to write about the `condition of England'. Gissing was one of the bleakest contributors: he offered no optimism, no way out, no reason for optimism. His endings were of the kind that we saw recently in the movie Winter's Bone: deceptive little meaningless pseudo triumphs, not more than moments of rest. People don't rise from the nether world. Upper and nether worlds don't have any permeable interfaces.

Central hero of this decently depressing master piece is a qualified worker in the jewelry industry, with some lost illusions about talent in art and with a failed young love.
While still a young man, `he reached the stage of confident and aspiring radicalism, believing in the perfectibility of man, in human brotherhood, in anything you like that is the outcome of a noble heart sheltered by ignorance'. That stage was gone now, `to give place to nothing very satisfactory'. The man tries to stay decent, to have friendships, to help people worse off than he is himself...

Gissing's Pip-equivalent is young Jane, the grandchild of the old man who came back from Ossiland and who is expected to leave something to her. At the outset of the novel she is 13 and she is for all practical purposes a domestic slave in a boarding house, mistreated by a sadistic tyrant of a teenage daughter of the owner.
We get to meet rather many un-nice people down here in the nether world. Poverty is not conducive to social graces, and decency is challenged hard under miserable conditions.
Gissing was not much of a sympathizer with the 'low classes', nor was he a 'radical', nor was he a modernizer of literature. What he brought to his subject here is detailed knowledge based on own experience as well as on meticulous research. The Oxford World Classics edition that I have gives us excerpts from Gissing's note books in the appendix, where he wrote down the facts of life for use in the book.

During the 90s, she became an independent, direct sales representative, and was awarded the Senior Representative and Top Producer ten years in a row. In 2006, Esther joined Ambit Energy as a marketing consultant, where her work ethic and distinguished sales strategies earned her numerous accolades, including Top 10 money earner seven years in a row, and Millionaire Club member four years in a row. Since 2008, Esther has concentrated on developing her network, Ambitious Women, and has hosted annual conferences. Married to Frank, they have four grown children and five healthy grandchildren.

Everybody can be successful with desire and ambition

I was fortunate enough to receive a copy of The Ambitious Woman. The book is filled with inspirational stories of great people who fulfilled their dreams through hardships and obstacles. It's empowering. This book is motivational giving the reader steps to reach their dreams and goals. It's a must read! Esther is the real deal!

Esther Spina is one of the most dedicated entrepreneurs I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting and working with. She does what it takes to achieve her goals. She is willing to do what most people don’t: 1) take action, consistently, and, 2) ask for and implement feedback to improve and progress. Esther is such an incredible representative for women as she isn’t thrown off course because of difficult times or challenges. She just keeps on going… seeing challenges as part of the achievement of her success. I think what I love most about Esther is that she has a heart of gold and REALLY wants others to be successful. I love this book as it really makes you feel like you can do it too. Esther is on a crusade to help as many women as she can and she does it with style, grace, determination and perseverance. This book is a must read for Ambitious Women and those striving to be!

Usage of non-conventional ingredients plays their part to bridge the nutrient gap and make feed formulation more versatile. Corn steep liquor (CSL) is one of such untraditional by-products of corn wet-milling industry that can be used as feed ingredient in poultry diet. High protein content of CSL makes it an excellent protein source to be used in poultry diet.

Zafar Ullah was born in 1988 in Gojra. He completed his B.Sc. (Hons.) in Poultry Science in 2009 from University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, Pakistan. Then he completed his M.Sc. (Hons.) in Animal Nutrition from the same institute in 2011. Presently, he is Ph.D. scholar.

David V. Esterline is Director of the Institute for Cross-Cultural Theological Education and James G. K. McClure Professor of Theological Education at McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, Illinois. His works include More than a Story: Nine Studies for Women on the Parables of Jesus, which he coauthored, and two chapters in Opting for Change: A Handbook on Evaluation and Planning for Theological Education by Extension.

Ogbu U. Kalu was Henry Winters Luce Professor of World Christianity at McCormick Theological Seminary prior to his death in 2008. He published many books, including Power, Poverty and Prayer: The Challenges of Poverty and Pluralism in African Christianity, 1960-1996 and, as editor, History of the Church in the Third World: Vol. III, African Christianity: An African Story, plus more than 150 articles in journals and edited volumes.

Many Christians talk about multicultural ministry. Esterline and his team outline how to teach, train, and equip ministers in a multicultural seminary setting. Personally, teaching in a seminary with no majority culture in the Washington, D. C. area, I found Esterline's views practical and realistic.
